I recently got a Treo 750 for the Cingular network. The device in and of itself is pretty hot.  UMTS is awesome.  I’ve gotten speeds as high as 2.1Mbits; but I think that may have been a fluke.  The lowest speed I’ve gotten was 699kbits.  So yes… UMTS is definitely yummy.

HOWEVER… let’s talk call quality.  Yeah… not so much.  Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve started and stopped single conversations as much as 6 times due to dropped calls.  This is driving me NUTS!  I use my cell phone to conduct freelancing business; and I’m finding it very difficult to do so when the 750 keeps dropping calls in areas where it appears to have 3-4 bar signal strength.

Its killing me.  When the phone is good, its very, very good.  When its bad… you get the point. I know I’m not the only person experiencing this.  If you’re a 750 user, and you’re having trouble with dropped calls in strong signal areas, I’d appreciate you weighing in.

I haven’t had any trouble with dropped calls on my Treo 750v connected to the 3 Australia network, either when on UMTS (with email and stuff downloading in the background) or roaming on GSM (GPRS). I have only had a call drop a few times and thats when I went into a shopping centre, and the signal dropped out.

Any 750v users had trouble like Chris?

(either using an unlocked 750v on Cingular or in other parts of the world with other networks)

    Chris:

This is a known problem with the 750. I talked about it on my show, “The Cell Phone Junkie” podcast this past weekend. Here is the link to the review from Phonescoop where they talk about it:

    Thanks.

    Mickey!!

Thanks, dude! I knew this wasn’t an isolated incident. I appreciate the link. I tried googling it earlier, but didn’t find it.

Thanks again for the help! Keep up the good work with the podcast!!

Yeah I thought I had read about a few cases of this with the Cingular 750.

I think that it is per phone basis issue. The review unit I was using sounded awesome, had ZERO dropped calls, and I have nothing bad to say about this subject.

The retail model I am using right now has had a couple little quirks that I am trying to pin down.

Welcome to the land of Treo, Home of the Dropped Call. Alas it isn’t only the 750 that drops calls with full or partial bar strength, it’s also the 700w and 700wx.
The make a very good PDA but one also gets one footitis; move your head 1 foot right or left and voila one can make the call! It has to be the radio and not the antenna. I am on my 5th 700w and all have the same problem, dropped calls, nonreceived calls, and calls going directly to voice mail. It also is not carrier dependant; Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint models all do it.
Palm has known about this since the 650 first came out and yet has not fixed it.

I didn’t have this problem with my 700w or wx. This is really unique so far to the 750. I’m also getting very frustrated with it. If it keeps this up, I may have to retire the phone for a while. I am hoping that Cingular/ATT is listening and that there’s a radio ROM upgrade in the works that fixes this issue. Perhaps when they release the patch for HSDPA, they will also release a fix for this issue.

I experienced some apparently well publicized Treo 750 dropped calls also.

I experienced a couple of dropped calls in the span of a few minutes in a well covered area. Reading around, I think the problem may be the switch over from UMTS to EDGE area while on a voice call. At least that’s the scenario that I believed I experienced. On a positive note, when I have been in a solid UMTS and solid EDGE area, I have not experienced any dropped calls.

set your phone to gsm or umts, not automatic. some sort of software issue(normal) that treo hasn’t fixed yet. i have my demo set for gsm and when i want to do some surfing i set it to umts.
