I received an email a couple weeks ago saying “Jim Morrison wants to send you an i-mate JAQ3 Windows Mobile phone – can you please send me your detailed shipping address and contact telephone numbers?” I know the poor guy must get it all the time, but his name did give me a bit of a start. I sent in my details, and late last week a JAQ3 appeared. We’ll do the unboxing together now, and the review is tentatively scheduled for March 5.

Documentation, CDs and a case are included in the top half of the box…

…the bottom half has the JAQ3, the charger, and other goodies.

Here’s everything laid out…

The JAQ3 measures 5″ long x 2.65″ wide x 0.57″ thick, and it weighs 5.1 ounces. The edges are rounded just enough that it fits quite comfortably in my hand, and I like its overall appearance.

The camera says 2.0 megapixel, so hopefully it will do better than some of the other PDA cameras I’ve tried.

SIM card placement is a bit different than I am used to seeing – instead of a slot with a retaining bracket, this one has a slot in which to insert the SIM.

The stylus is nothing special – a telescoping jobbie, but – I think it is awesome that the PDA phone runs WM5 Pocket PC Phone Edition, not Smartphone as I halfway expected.

So far I like the JAQ3′s rubberized grippy coating, its smaller than expected size, and the full keyboard. The screen is bright, and performance seems okay; battery life…not so great, but I’ll get into that much more during the review process.

We’ll will be offering this JAQ3 in an upcoming give-away, so keep an eye outGear Diary Unboxing the i mate JAQ3 photo

I have had a fascination with all types of gadgets and gizmos since I was a child, beginning with the toy robot that my grandmother gave my brother - which I promptly "relieved him of" in 1973. I have long been captivated by devices that did anything interesting or served a unique purpose - however silly. I can't tell you how everything works – but I am known world-wide for using a product until I have a full understanding of what it does, what its limitations are, and if it excels in any given area...or not.
