Okay, okay, I couldn’t help the early newspaper type alliterative headline. Being a Detroit native, this story of alleged sex and perjury caught my attention.
The story is that the mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, fired some police officers. The officers sued the city claiming wrongful termination. They claimed that the mayor fired them because they were going to tell about an affair they claimed he was having with his chief of staff. On the witness stand, the mayor and the chief of staff swore they weren’t having an affair. Now they are in hot water for perjury. Their accuser, you may ask? Story is that it was 14,000 some-odd text messages on a city-owned pager. The gadget got ‘em – allegedly detailing their relationship – meeting times, feelings, etc.

It story didn’t say how the local newspaper, the Detroit Free Press, got the messages, but apparently they correspond to the mayor’s calendar and city charge card receipt. As of this morning, the county prosecutor has opened an investigation into the whole thing.
Oh, and by the way – the police officers won their whistleblower lawsuit and the cash-strapped city now owes them $8.4 million dollars. That is going to prove to be one expensive beeper!

Classic!
Nothing worse than lying, but getting caught lying by your own gadget, lol.
Let me wonder aloud. If you sent 14,000 text messages — wouldn’t those around you wonder what the heck you were doing ?
Does this leave any time for official city business?
I wonder how much goes on in local government that we don’t hear about.
Think about this new tidbit that I learned of last night.
John Rowland, former Governor of CT, was convicted and sent to prison a few years ago for financial shenanigans. The monkey business involved kickbacks and freebies from people looking to do business with the state. Apparently it was quite widespread involving not only the Governor but many of his staff. They saw nothing wrong with it.
Now he is out of prison.
So who hires him?
The city of Waterbury CT.
Position? Economic Development Chief.
That’s right. In the new position he’ll be able to offer companies incentives to relocate or do business with the city.
Unbelievable. Oh yeah, they’ll pay him $90,000 to $120,000 per year.
I’m not making this up:
Ugh. Didn’t think I’d see this here. I understand the link just sad to see more of it (I live in Detroit).
14,000 texts isn’t all that much considering the things were given to multiple staff and I’m sure they are just giving a total, not just out going.
I’ve got 6,000 sitting on my Mogul right now, in about 4 months time.
“I’ve got 6,000 sitting on my Mogul right now, in about 4 months time.”
I probably have just as many. I have to admit that 9 times out of 10 I prefer a quick text versus a phone call. But that’s just me…anti-social!
