Gear Diary Salvation Army Red Kettle testing credit cards at certain collection points photo

This holiday season the Salvation Army is stepping up their payment processing by accepting credit cards as select red kettle locations. No longer will you be able to bypass the bell ringers (who are already out in force in Connecticut) with the claim that you have no spare change. Over 500 locations will be testing this new payment method. If you chose to donate by credit card, the minimum amount is $5. If your a true online addict and the thought of leaving the house to shop is foreign to you, then visit the online Red Kettle and set up your own annoying collection bin that you can even spam your former Facebook friends with.

Can’t spare a dime for the red kettle? How about a credit card?

The Salvation Army is a questionable organization at best…there have been boycotts for years of their kettles due to their anti-gay, anti-hiv+ policies. They’ve tried to strongarm cities into suspending domestic partner benefits or they (the salvation army) won’t help with homelessness, etc.

You could do what I do, and pledge to donate to a different charity of your choice (I choose goodwill) every time you see a bellringer. I pledge 2.00 per bellringer, so far goodwill will get a check for 4.00. I am sure it will increase greatly by the end of the year.
