Gear Diary New York MTA text message alerts now available via email and SMS photo

Headed into New York City this shopping season? Whether you’re an occasional traveler to the city or a daily commuter, the MTA alert system is now available to provide you with the latest bulletins of transit delays and news. You can select to receive news and alerts on the following lines:

Subway
Buses (operated by MTA)
Railroads – LIRR and Metro North
Bridges & Tunnels

The service also lets you establish quiet periods when no alerts will be sent to your device – weekdays, weekends, etc. If you’re traveling on Metro North and carry an iPhone, take a look at StationStop which puts the entire schedules on your device. You can also view a mobile optimized version of the MTA site at http://mta.info (put on your reading glasses because the print is tiny and for some reason they link to PDF documents instead of mobile friendly graphics)
