Dome Skin Skins For iPods and iPhones – Review

Dome Skin

I don’t like clear invisible skin protection on my devices. I know a lot of people swear by them. I know they provide excellent protection. Unfortunately, I’m just not a fan. I don’t particularly like the way they look, and I definitely don’t like the way they feel. It’s a shame because there’s no question that they gave the best consistent protection to delicate electronic devices like the iPhone.

As a result, I tend to use larger, heavier cases; it’s okay but it’s not as nice or as delicate of a solution. That’s why I was interested to learn about Dome Skin. It’s a very different solution for protecting your device and for giving it a brand-new decorative look, as well. Let’s take a a closer look.

Their Description–

Dome Skin

The DomeSkin is specially designed to protect your expensive device while allowing you to personalize it with your own unique custom style. DomeSkin products can be easily removed from the device arid come off totally clean thanks to the patented 3M technology used in the construction.

Unlike thin vinyl based skins, DomeSkin products are reusable and they provide an additional 3D layer of protection. The clear dome design not only offers a customizable stylish 3D look for your device, it also inhibits slipping and allows better gripping of the device. DomeSkin products are scratch-resistant and much more durable than other thin vinyl skin products.

My perspective —

Dome Skin

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the skins but was pleased when they arrived. I received three different sets to review — one for my iPhone 3G., one for my second generation iPod touch, and one for my fourth-generation iPod nano. (They are also available for a wide variety of other iPods. Check the site for details.)  In all cases there was a skin for the front and the back. Installing them is a quick and simple process. You simply wiped down the front or the back of the device, peel the skin off of its backing, and carefully placed it on to the device. (It usually took me two or three tries to get it right, and fortunately the skins are rather forgiving with regard to placing and replacing them.

Dome Skins

I actually like the look of the skins very much. In particular I like the way the skin I put on my iPod touch looks. It has a lovely view of the New York subway system, and it looks quite neat. I also happen to like the way it feels.

At the same time, the skins don’t add a lot of bulk or weight to the device — this is something I really appreciate about them.

It isn’t all good news, however as these skins are about a LOT of aesthetics and a fair bit, but not complete, protection. Unfortunately, Dome Skins don’t protect the entire device, and they leave it open to a good deal of making and scratching. Sure, it protects the entire back of each device as well as the area around the screen — what it does not protect however are the incredibly vulnerable sides.

This is, to my mind, a huge downside, since part of the reason that I want to keep my devices protected all times is so that I can resell them at some future date. There’s nothing that wrecks the look, and by extension the value, of a device with nicked up sides.

So, will I be using these on my devices? Yes and no. I’m not a huge fan of the skin on my iPhone, since the sides are too vulnerable. I do like that protection around the front and the fact that it adds a protective buffer around the delicate screen. So for time I was using the front piece while having a hard shell around the back to cover the rest of it.

With regard to my iPod touch and my iPod nano, however, I am actually finding the skins quite nice and, since I usually use my iPod touch with nothing at all, using the skins is certainly an improvement from a perspective of protecting the device.

What I like —

They add style and uniqueness to the device.

They add some good grip and soft feel to the device.

Still relatively easy to put on and are reusable.

What needs improvement —

They don’t offer full 360° protection

More information on these and other iPod skins is available at DomeSkin. Skins have an MSRP of $14.99.
