As Seen On TV…

While away on vacation I’ve been watching the series Sanctuary thanks to Netflix streaming and my Roku box. It’s a scifi show that, once you suspend your belief system (and a good portion of your intellect Gear Diary As Seen On TV... photo ) is rather fun. Along the way they have made one major tech goof, but later redeemed themselves more than a bit.

Last night the show almost lost me when one character ended a cell phone call on a bridge. The problem was… she was using an iPod Touch.

Note to the show’s technical advisors– iPod Touch’s are great for calls but only when you have wifi and a headset for voip. On a bridge holding the device to your ear… not so much.

Tonight they redeemed themselves when they showed EXCELLENT taste in computers.

First there was the bluetooth Apple keyboard. That was a good start. Then it got better…

I was looking for the Mac that went along with the keyboard. It was nowhere to be found. A little later, however, one of the main characters was busy using a tablet computer. This wasn’t any old tablet computer, though. No, this was a Axiotron ModBook – the only Mac tablet available.

Would I love to get my hands on one of those… you bet! In the meantime, though, it sure was fun to see one on TV.

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him.
