Gear Diary Google vs. Bing. vs. Yahoo: Fight! photo

I came across this website this morning and thought it would make a fun experiment. In the spirit of blind taste tests like Coke vs Pepsi, one website has set up a Bing vs. Google vs. Yahoo. In this blind test, is your favorite search engine the one that reigns supreme? I tested it with 10 random searches I’ve done lately and listed next to it the website that won each blind test. Read on for the results…

Search test/result

1) Google Voice deleted from App Store/Google

2) Palm Pre review/Google

3) Dog care/Yahoo

4) 2010 Prius/Google

5) Seattle hotels/Yahoo

6) Local Weather (my zip code)/Yahoo

7) Cheap flights/Google

8) Pork chop recipe/Google

9) Brandeis University/Bing

10) Wineries in New Jersey/Bing

So Google wins it, but hardly a landslide…Bing looked weaker at first, but then came back strong at the end. My criteria in voting for a website was pretty subjective; if I searched for a review, I didn’t want the official  product website. If the first 3 hits were variations on the same website, I immediately eliminated it. After that, I just went with what looked more useful. Google is my usual search engine of choice, though I think I might switch it up for variety now that I’ve seen all 3 side by side!

Highly subjective within the blind test, but there you go…now, you try! Let us know below if there were any surprises when you saw the results!

Carly has been a gadget fiend for a long time, going back to her first PDA (a Palm M100). She quickly went from researching what PDA to buy to following tech news closely and keeping up with the latest and greatest stuff. She loves writing about ebooks because they combine her two favorite activities; reading anything and everything, and talking about fun new tech toys. What could be better?

I also chose Google more often than not …

Funny thing, I searched “miles davis circle in the round”, looking for info as well as links to appear. Two of three had sites appear that made little sense, in other words were ‘artist direct’ links for someone dead for ~17 years! Only one site had milesdavis.com. But the funny thing was that one site had a link to Yahoo Music … and that site was Bing!

Another interesting one was Principal Components Analysis … while the other two were a random set of links, Google had a top 10 filled with basics, tutorials, theory, applications … in other words it all made sense.
