Gear Diary Nintendo Announces New Larger Screen DS Gaming Device photo

Hold on a second – don’t check your calendar, you haven’t time-warped back to last year! Indeed, merely 6 months after the launch of the DSi, Nintendo has announced that on November 21st they will release the DSi LL in Japan, for the equivalent of $220. Read on for more details!

The top picture shows the DSi LL, and for reference the screen size of the DSi is shown as a dashed line overlay.

The major new thing about the DSi LL is … the screens are 1″ larger than the DSi! That’s right – one of the touted features of the DSi was bigger screens, and now the DSi LL REALLY ups the ante! Sadly the DSi LL screens are the same resolution, and there are no new processors under the hood, so there is no chance that the DSi LL will be usable as a true media convergence device to battle the PSP and iPod Touch.

Aside from larger screens, the new DSi LL touts longer battery life and a significantly larger size. Battery life is a great help, as each new DS version has lost some amount of battery life – with the DSi LL Nintendo gets back to the solid level of ~15 hours of the DS Lite.

I have loved technology for as long as I can remember - and have been a computer gamer since the PDP-10! Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!

The larger screens may make using the KORG DS-10 nicer.
