Sennheiser MM400

The other day I was having lunch with a good friend. He enjoys his gadgets as much as the rest of us and was excited to tell me about this latest acquisition. He had purchased a pair of Sennheiser MM400 Bluetooth stereo headphones and couldn’t stop raving about them. At a cost of over $260 they were bit on the pricey side but he kept talking about them so positively that I finally said I would need to go check them out. “Hold on a minute” he said and he ran out to the car. He brought them back into the restaurant for me to have a look and… well, wow.

As it turns out there was good reason for him to be raving about these headphones. They are exceptionally comfortable, sound superb and seem to have the ability to create and hold a Bluetooth connection far better than most Bluetooth devices I have tried. Moreover, they have an neat little design feature that lets you use them while flying even when the flight attendants demand that all devices with radios be turned off. They can even be used as a headset for your cellphone!

In the end I picked up a pair. I have been using them for a few days now and am quite happy with my purchase. Let’s take a look —

What I like —

They are exceptionally comfortable and sound great, the ability to use them as a Bluetooth headset for your cell phone is a nice addition, the ability to turn them into a wired headset is not only smart but will come in handy when were on a plane tomorrow

What needs improvement —

They are pricey, no doubt about that

The Sennheiser MM400 are available from Apple for $269.95.

  1. It's strange to me how Gear Diary keeps “discovering” these features.

More than 2 yrs ago I bought a pair of Plantronics Pulsar 590E headphones.

“ability to use as a Bluetooth headset for cell phone”? Check.

“ability to turn them into a wired headset”? Check.

“create and hold a Bluetooth connection”? Over 2yrs I haven't had a single connection issue. They even pair happily with my phone and PC simultaneously. Skype likes them too!

Sennheiser are a great name in audio and I'm sure these are perfectly good headphones but my Pulsars came with a transmitter dongle as well (for devices without A2DP), an attractive charging dock, and a second charging cable which works over USB. Total cost? $60. I doubt very much that the Sennheisers will be 5 times as good!

great headset & does indeed work with the iPhone. see for yourself at your local apple store where they are on display.

  3. Can anyone advise if these are suitable for regular jogging?
I have had some PX 200 that have held up for years and am wondering if they’re similar comfort/ruggedness

    • The headphones are great from both a sound and a build perspective BUT… I think they would be a bit on the heady side for jogging or similar activities and I would question whether or not they would stay on the head.

  4. Love the MM400 headset, I just wish it would work properly.

I use them with Skype all day and after almost every call I need to reconnect to bluetoouth as when i hang up i lose connectivity. Also many times I can hear myself when I speak with someone else (not always!) and it is so annoying.

Sennheiser website seems to be no good at just asking basic questions on how to stop this happening.
