Looking for a way to give assistance to Haiti in the wake of the tragic earthquake? Thanks to the Red Cross and Yele Haiti, you can do it through a text message.
To donate to the Red Cross, text HAITI to 90999; this will automatically donate $10.00 to Haitian earthquake relief, billed to you through your cell phone. If you’d prefer to support singer Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti, text YELE to 501501 (this donation is for $5.00).
What amazes me is how fast news and support has travelled. The earthquake was late Sunday/early Monday, and these organizations already have a text message payment method set up! Obviously, Twitter and Facebook have become epicenters of news and discussion as well, with events like this again highlighting the way we hear and respond to news has changed. Several years ago in the wake of a tragedy (that you saw on the nightly news) you might write a check; a few years ago you would go to a website (after you read about it on cnn.com); today you don’t even have to reach for your wallet to make a difference, and you probably heard about it hours before the nightly news reported it!
If you prefer to donate through the organizations directly, you can visit the Red Cross and Yele Haiti‘s websites.
