Gear Diary Square Enix Bring Final Fantasy I & II to the iTunes App Store photo

Apparently someone noticed there was a gaming platform for which Final Fantasy I & II was NOT available! That obviously needed to be quickly remedied! So Square Enix yesterday announced via their Facebook page that the classic jRPG games will be coming soon to the App Store.

So far that is the entire extent of the announcement – no details of price, release date, if they are the most recent version (i.e. GBA / PSP) or whether they will be released as a set (e.g. GBA version) or as single games (e.g. the over-priced PSP releases). Stay tuned – these classics are coming, and I’ll certinly be playing!

I have loved technology for as long as I can remember - and have been a computer gamer since the PDP-10! Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!

Very, very nice. This looks like the PSOne version too, or so the graphics suggest. Retro gaming on iPhone? I approve.

@ Haesslich – yeah, the GBA ‘FF I & II Dawn of Souls’ was a port of the PSOne classic with added dungeons and features. The PSP versions were graphical updates but otherwise the same (but separated so they cost $60 to get both!). This looks more like the PSP versions.

I still approve. That’s a new touch-based menu system and what looks like a virtual D-pad in another screenshot. Definitely something to look forward to, and something that may give Nintendo (and Sony) a few more headaches, especially the latter.

Oh – I definitely approve of the App Store release … apparently my annoyance at the PSP releases still shows through :D

Well, I remember when the PSP versions first came out. For $40 US per game.

By way of comparison, the Final Fantasy Origins release for PSOne currently goes for $20 US and was released just a few years back. And the worst part is the graphics were comparable to the PSP releases in my books, given that the revamping of the graphics is a bit lost on the smaller screen.

    Yeah, I’m not bitter. ;)

It was just released today. Final Fantasy I and II, $8.99 apiece at the App Store.

@Haesslich – blech … I was hoping for $10 – $15 max for the pair, but with Squeenix I should have known better …
