Gear Diary El Text o: Silly Name, Awesome Rapidweaver Add On! photo

A little over a year ago I took over building and maintaining my community’s Web site. The reasons were simple. We were doing some cost-cutting and the folks who built and maintained our site were not inexpensive. Add in the fact that I wanted us to be able to update the site rapidly and it just made sense to bring it “in-house”. So I tried a number of different approaches and eventually ended up using Rapidweaver to build it. (I got Rapidweaver as part of a MacHeist bundle and was impressed with its power and Flexibility of it.)

For the past year I have been using SproutBuilder to create all sorts of flash plugins. I used it for the front page so that updating the site from any browser was simple. I used it to create complex tutorial modules for our students to use when studying. It was powerful. It was impressive. It took a fair bit of effort but I finally got things where I wanted them.

Then the company announced that they were closing down their consumer product and we have a little over a month to prepare. I. Was. Not. Pleased.

After a bit of back and forth they agreed to let us keep using the product for 1/2 of the enterprise price of $3000. At first I was going to take the offer but after some thought I decided that (a) I did not want to do business with a company like this (b) if they could shut their users out with a little over a month’s notice what was there to say the same would not happen again with the enterprise product (c) we moved the site in-house to save money And the sudden jump of over $1200 undid much of that.

So I went in search of a new way to bring some unique qualities and functionality to the site. That is where I Learned about the variety of plugins for the Rapidweaver Stacks pages. And that was where I “met” Brian Morgan and his El-Stacko collections of Rapidweaver add-ons. I was impressed.

I have already used his “SideWinder” stack to put lots of text on a single page without the page feeling cramped. I’ve used his “El-Winko” stack to hide/reveal a long collection of page links on the front page. And I used a pre-release of his “El Text-o” stack to add animated text to the homepage.

Well Brian has just released El Text-o and he is offering some great discounts on it. If you use Rapidweaver it is definitely worth checking out both El-Stacko and Nimblehosts’ offerings.

The full release follows…

El Text-o is here & we share a deal with Nimblehost! Big News !!!

A New Stack !! El Presidente is extremely happy to announce the arrival of El Text-o , RapidWeaver’s first (and only) animated text Stack. El text-o allows you to display a text message on your page which glides in letter by letter. If that was not enough, the letters change colors (your choice of course) dance around, replace other letters, discard unused letters and finally, display your entire message. Finished? Only if you want them to be….. otherwise, El Text-o will slowly fade and collapse on itself, leaving behind no clue that it was ever there. “Impossible”, you say… head over to El Stacko.com and see for yourself. El Presidente has provided a free downloadable version of El Text-o (with most customizations disabled) just so you can try it out on your Mac and see for yourself. Once you’ve seen it at work, you can head back to the store and pick up your own copy, without the restrictions, and take advantage of the largest discounts allowed by law! I’ll be giving you El Discount-o Code-o Grande a bit later in this newsletter…. so read on! If you feel you absolutely must view El text-o in action, go here.

El CallBox-o
(You’ll never tire of those clever names, will you?) El Presidente snuck this one into the store about a week ago without too much fanfare. El CallBox-o is a quiet little Stack that draws attention to special areas on your site. It’s great for quotes, key concepts, excerpts, ideas… any small bit of content you want to highlight. It’s a concept used regularly in magazine and newspaper articles. It’s tough to adequately describe so go take a look at the store…. and then buy it!

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him.
