After trying a variety of different Internet radio offerings, I settled on Slacker Radio and paid for a Slacker Plus subscription. I even spent an evening creating a custom Slacker Radio station that let me revisit the ’80 music of my teen years.
I’m a huge fan of Slacker, and with the release of the Slacker Radio 2.0 app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch it just got even better.
The big feature of Slacker Radio 2 is the ability to cache radio stations. This feature is only available for Slacker Plus subscribers ($3.99 per month) and can be checked out without risk thanks to a 14 day trial that is available to anyone with a Slacker Radio account.
The process of caching a station is simple.
Launch Slacker Radio…
Choose and start a radio station…
Tap the “Cache This Station” button on the bottom…
It will ask if you want to cache the station. As the message explains, it will let you know how many stations you can cache based upon your free storage.
It will then begin the process of caching the station. You can cache up to 1000 tracks at a time. This is particularly handy if you are using an iPod touch or an iPad that only has WiFi available. It is also a nice feature in light of AT&T sudden change in data plans since it means you’ll be able to listen to your Slacker Radio stations on the go without using up any of your monthly data allotment.
Other benefits of the Slacker Radio Plus subscription include ad-free listening, complete song lyrics, “peek ahead” artist and album previews, unlimited song skipping, unlimited song requests and more. To my mind it is a great deal and I could not be happier with having made the decision to start using the $3.99 per month Plus subscription.
The only disappointment here is that while the Slacker Radio app will work on the iPad and is being advertised as such it continues to require “pixel doubling” in order to fill the screen. The music is fine but the graphics are the highly pixellated look we have all come to know and hate… Let’s hope a full iPad solution is on the way.
The full release, including a full feature list, follows…
Slacker Radio Announces iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Station Caching for Listening Everywhere
Slacker Radio 2.0 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Includes Station Caching for Listening to Music Without a Mobile or Wi-Fi Connection
SAN DIEGO, CA – June 3, 2010 – Slacker, Inc. today announced the availability of Slacker Radio 2.0 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch*. For the first time ever, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can cache their favorite Slacker music stations to listen anywhere – whether they are connected to a wireless network or not and without incurring data charges.
With Slacker Radio 2.0 for iPhone and a Slacker Radio Plus subscription, music lovers can select specific stations to cache while they are listening by simply tapping “Cache This Station” from any station page. Once stations have been selected, individual songs for the stations are automatically downloaded by selecting “Refresh Stations” from the Cached Stations link in the home screen view. During a station refresh the application will store up to thousands of songs on the device for off-line playback allowing stations to be accessed on planes, subways and everywhere in between with no interruptions and greatly reduced battery use. Along with the ability to store stations to the device, Slacker Radio Plus features ad-free listening, complete song lyrics, “peek ahead” artist and album previews, unlimited song skipping, unlimited song requests and more.
iPod touch and iPad owners can now listen to Slacker Radio beyond Wi-Fi networks and take their favorite tunes wherever they go without having to manage playlists or transfer music from their home computers. Free Slacker Basic Radio listeners will be able to cache stations for up to 14 days, providing the opportunity to try this new feature on their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, risk-free.
