If you own a smartphone you’re probably aware that there’s a ton of universal pouches available that’ll work with your device. Some leather, some nylon, some who knows? But none are tailor-made, specific for the device you own. These pouches are mass-produced to accommodate many phones that are all generally the same size. I’ve yet to see a company make a pouch style case sized to fit only one device. That is until now.
Enter the Primary Case Company. The company, which was started by a fellow smartphone users who were unhappy with the retail market’s selection of cases for their devices, seeks to create not only functional cases but cases that look good too. They’ve combined their case lineup with a positive customer service philosophy and started a company which stands behind everything they do.
Every order placed is shipped for the exact same amount. No matter how many cases you order and no matter where you live (in the U.S.) you’ll always pay a flat $5 for shipping. And Primary Case uses Federal Express so you can track your case’s journey along the way. Hate the automated voice prompts many company’s use these days? Not Primary. Call them up between the hours of 9 to 5 EST and you’ll always get a live voice on the other end of the phone. Finally, once you receive your case you’ll have 90 days to try it out. That’s right, they company gives a 90 day, unconditional guarantee with each of their cases too. What more could you ask for?
Primary Case was kind enough to send me one of their “4 Cast” cases for review. This horizontal leather pouch was tailor-made to fit the newly released iPhone 4. I prefer to use my iPhone naked (it’s protected with a full body Clear Coat skin) but I still need a way to carry it around when I go out. I’ve got enough stuff in my pockets already so a belt style pouch is a good solution.
Quality starts from the moment you receive your order. Is there anything worse than waiting for a package all day and then having it show up in a box that looks like the Federal Express truck ran over it? The packaging Primary Case uses is thick and durable. The whole set up reminds me of the way Apple ships the iPhone. A custom logo printed, heavy protective box with your case suspended inside. Opening the box reveals a card which on one side details your order while the other explains their no questions asked return policy.

Lift the card out-of-the-way and you’ll reveal your case, tucked safely into a pouch inside. Another nice touch. No blister pack to deal with, no extra plastic you don’t need. You can reuse the pouch for something else meaning the company is even doing good for the environment.

The 4 Case case is made from genuine leather that’s reinforced with nylon in the case’s “high traffic” areas. The leather is thick and stiff at first, but as any good leather will likely soften over time. The front of the case features the company’s logo embossed subtlety.

Under the flap there’s a magnet hidden away which keeps the case closed when you want it so.

The back of the case features a swiveling belt clip that’s reinforced with a metal tab and the bottom. The clip is long enough to fit over most belts.

On the bottom of the case there’s a small cut out which allows you to easily push the phone out when you need to access it.

The sides of the case include full protection for the iPhone 4. Unfortunately this does come at a cost though and like most pouches of this type you’ll have to remove the device from the case to charge and or sync it.

There’s nothing worse than using a pouch style case for your device that doesn’t really fit. I’ve tried many of the universal type and found most either too big or too small. Too big and your phone slides around inside. Too small and it’s either impossible to get in or even worse, impossible to get out when you need it.
Having a pouch style case tailor made for the iPhone 4 just makes sense and the 4 Cast case fits the device like a well-worn glove. Inserting your phone is easy. It goes it either way (I always suggest inserting it screen in) and removing it when you need it isn’t an issue either.

Sometimes having a good quality case for sale just isn’t enough. Most of us here at Gear Diary know this all too well. A company needs to possess both sides of the “sales equation” to survive. Good products and Good service. The Primary Case Company is on the right track for doing just that. They’ve combined affordable cases that are made well and function the way you’d expect with a customer service philosophy that could just be one of the best I’ve come across.
But don’t take my word for it. Head to the company’s website here and order a case of your own. You’ll receive it in short order and have 90 to try it out.
M.S.R.P. – $29.99
What I like – Good customer service philosophy, properly sized case for device.
What I don’t like – Can’t charge device while in case.
