I don’t know about you but personally I’ve got a lot of social media “friends.” I use quotes around friends because while many of these people follow me and I follow them I’m not sure it’s fair to call them my friends. In fact a majority of the people who I follow on Twitter I’ve never even met IRL (in real life.)
A new mobile application called face2face seeks to remedy that. The concept behind the application is simple. It combines the contacts from your various social media services like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and automatically alerts both you and them when you’re near each other. Once an alert from face2face pops up you can then choose to call the person, text them or shoot them an IM to meet up, “face to face.”
To squash security concerns the application doesn’t actually reveal your exact location to the other person (a la Foursquare) it just lets your “friends” know you’re nearby. And you can also choose to have to application make you invisible for those times when you want to run around unseen. This is great because I’m not sure I need some of my crazy Twitter stalkers knowing my exact location in proximity to them 24/7. That just makes stalking way too easy.
face2face is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store here, the Android Market here and for Blackberry devices here.
