Gear Diary Headscratcher of the Year: Books A Million To Sell the NOOKcolor photo

I don’t get this. I don’t get this at all. NOOK is Barnes and Noble’s flagship device. It’s how they plan to push for ebook dominance. So why are they selling their flagship device through a competitor AND with the competitor’s store preloaded?

Books A Million is the third largest bookstore in the country, behind B&N and Borders. As far as I can tell, there’s no business connection between B&N and BAM beyond the NOOKcolor. Unless this is some bizarre foreplay before B&N makes a merger play for BAM I don’t see the benefit for either party. NOOK is a brand name that’s heavily associated with Barnes and Noble, so diluting it doesn’t help B&N’s cause. And selling a competitor’s product is just confusing for BAM’s customers.

What really throws me for a bit of a loop is that there’s plenty of alternatives for Books A Million if they want to expand their ebook offerings. Commission a halfway decent Android tablet, strike a deal with one of the many, many eInk ereaders out there, or if you really need or want commercial appeal call Sony! They’re probably sweating bullets over the increased competition at Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart and would love a chance to be showcased. It just doesn’t add up for me why they would use the NOOK brand.

And I really don’t see what B&N gets out of it. Are they so hard up for cash that selling some hardware is making the difference? B&N isn’t going to get any ongoing sales from these NOOKs. No one who buys books for these is going to get those books from their NOOK apps on their phones, and try explaining THAT to an irate customer. Or will Books A Million also want to put a NOOK app on your smartphone? NOOK by Books A Million AND NOOK by Barnes and Noble? This isn’t confusing at all… See below for B&N’s clarification.

The full press release is below, and I’ve reached out to Barnes and Noble to see if they have any comments on the arrangement.

Edit: I heard back from Barnes and Noble, and they’ve clarified it for me. The Books A Million NOOK will be linked to the Barnes and Noble Store. Users will log in using their B&N ID, and they will have access to all the in-store extras at all Barnes and Noble stores that any other NOOK would have. Essentially, the Books A Million NOOK will be a B&N NOOK sold at BAM. Once it’s in the customer’s hands, it’s just like any other B&N NOOK.

Books-A-Million, Inc. today announced that the new NOOKcolor is available to pre-order for $249 online at www.booksamillion.com/nook and is expected to begin shipping November 19, making it the perfect holiday gift for people who love to read everything.

Carly has been a gadget fiend for a long time, going back to her first PDA (a Palm M100). She quickly went from researching what PDA to buy to following tech news closely and keeping up with the latest and greatest stuff. She loves writing about ebooks because they combine her two favorite activities; reading anything and everything, and talking about fun new tech toys. What could be better?

They actually announced this on 26 October, only no one noticed (except me):
    http://www.the-digital-reader.com/2010/10/26/bam-to-carry-the-nook-exclusively/

And it’s all 3 Nooks, not just the NookColor. But yes, I agree it’s weird.

As for why Nook over Sony, did you know that the Nook replaced Sony in Walmart’s in-store e-reader display? I think everyone perceives Sony as having fallen into 3rd place.

  • gous

It is possible that the Nooks sold at BAM will give an option of which bookstore to buy from? Or possibly B&N is about to become a digital wholesaler and will supply BAM with most (all) of its ebooks? Could be a trial run for selling the Nook in bookstore chains overseas? Perhaps some orders clerk entered an extra zero by mistake and B&N have Nooks coming out of their ears?
Alternatively Riggio plans to use the proceeds from selling B&N to buy BAM …

    • http://www.geardiary.com Carly Z

See, I’d believe the overstock theory if there was any B&N branding…but the BAM site and the press release just say NOOK, like the hardware is some sort of free agent.

I think the Riggio is trying to buy BAM theory is probably the most likely, but we’ll see. There’s been rumors for years of B&N trying to buy Borders, but BAM might be the healthier company/better fit.

      • gous

Actually I’m only being half serious. Unless Riggio has dementia there is no way he’s buying BAM. As it is CEO Lynch mentioned that ‘Nook will power BAM’s ebookstore as well’ according to Publishers Lunch. Looks something like the Borders/Kobo setup? We’ll have to see…

        • http://www.geardiary.com Carly Z

I’m going to avoid any comments on Riggio’s state of mind re: B&N ;-) .

See, again, even if it’s a Borders/Kobo deal, why is there no mention of B&N anywhere? It’s just confusing.

          • gous

Well this is pure speculation but this is the way I see it, given the paucity of info. BAM gets (some) (rebranded?) Nooks to sell. Those Nooks link up with BAM’s ebookstore, which is powered by B&N, same ways Kobo powers Borders. See it as a trial run for tryng this overseas by B&N, ie if they want to expand. They surely have to be thinking about overseas expansion.

  • http://www.geardiary.com Carly Z

Straight from B&N’s PR, the BAM NOOKs will be running B&N branded software and connected to B&N’s ebook store. Makes far more sense now!

    • gous

Okay…? Now I’m the baffled one. Great deal for B&N but looks like a bum deal for BAM. What’s in it for them? Is there any legs to the rumours that B&N will run their ebookstore? What did Lynch mean, or did Publishers Lunch misquote him?
      Inquiring minds want to know!

If they were passing through to a BAM sotre and B&N got some cut, I’d understand it, but now I’m confused too. I see what B&N gets, but what does BAM get? They were carrying the Sony readers which I know could not have been selling well. Maybe that’s all they get – a Sony replacement.

Funny thing – down here BAM is more popular than B&N and Borders is virtually non-existent. It also seems relatively healthy – at least the stores seem to stay stocked, which I can’t say was true for Border’s stores I visited up north. So I’ve surprised for some time that BAM hasn’t jumped into the eBook martket yet. Maybe this is that first step? Don’t know, but the market just gets more and more interesting!
