You can’t even make these things up … or maybe you can. It’s hard to imagine that your two-day old Motorola Droid — or any other mobile phone, for that matter — would explode next to your ear while in a call. But that’s exactly what Aron Embry says happened to him yesterday.

A North Texas man talking on his cell phone was rushed to a hospital after his phone apparently exploded Thursday morning.

Aron Embry was at Ray Elementary in Cedar Hill at the time of the incident. The man said he had just finished a call when he said he heard a loud “pop.”

He then felt something trickling down his face; it was blood.

According to the video, he drove to his wife’s work so she could take pictures after he realized his ear was all bloody, and then he went to the Dr. to get four stitches. Seriously? He didn’t think that his wife could meet him at the hospital and take pictures there, seeing as how he was bleeding so badly that he needed stitches? Priorities, people!

Evidently the Droid still works after exploding in his ear. Yikes. I’ve never had a phone explode, and I can’t imagine how freaked out I would be if it did happen; this is Motorola’s statement:

“Motorola’s priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety. We will reach out to the consumer and investigate this thoroughly.”

Sounds like they are being understandably cautious about the situation. I suppose we’ll eventually know if Aron is telling the truth and this is a case of “bad Droid” versus “man was talking on phone outside a school when his head was smacked with a wayward ball”, or some other such nonsense.
