One of the things I love is when something is spread throughout the Blogosphere that is just common sense. You know, those tidbits of news or rumor that you hear and you just think, “Well Duh????”

Two that have been floating around today really caught my eye.

The first…

Did you know that the iPad two will likely be thinner, lighter and have two cameras???

I know… I know… Shocking. I mean… It isn’t as if Apple has constantly been working to make their notebooks thinner and lighter, or they have added cameras to devices after the first or second generation. It isn’t as if one of the main criticisms people have of the iPad is that it is a bit too heavy to hold for an extended period while reading. And it isn’t as if the iPad is the only member of the iOS family besides the Apple TV to not have the ability to use FaceTime… Oh… wait a second… Oops.

Seriously, Apple making the next generation iPad thinner and lighter is a no-brainer and the fact that the first generation doesn’t have a camera or two only makes sense as a way to generate a significant upgrade path a year later. All the predictions are just logical and, even so, they are still just rumors.

So… thinner, lighter and cameras? Duh!

Then there is this…

A new survey shows that the iPad is having a detrimental effect on print subscriptions. Again I say… “Well duh?!?!”

To flesh this one out a bit since, unlike the first it is not based on rumor and leaked photos of cases that may or may not be real we find this in one article on the subject…

“A survey by a journalism institute suggests that those who consume a lot of news on their iPad are more likely to drop their print subscriptions.” Via Macworld

Since I got my iPad I have pretty much made the complete shift from print text to electronic media. I get my books through the Kindle app, my magazines through the Zinio app and my news through the NYTimes and Huffington post apps, I’ve even asked my assistant to stop printing material for me and simply send it to me as a pdf. Sure, I’m not the norm in this regard. I’m not a good example. My 61 year old father-in-law, on the other hand, is. He didn’t want an iPad but I bought him one for his trip to China and half way through the trip my mother-in-law emailed to let me know he loved it. When he began using the iPad he saw the NYTimes app as an addition to their subscription not a replacement for it. Fast forward to this morning. Before he had his coffee he came down the the common area at the resort where we are staying and downloaded the day’s paper just as he has each day we have been away. I asked him two questions-

Question- If your iPad was lost or stolen would you get a new one?
Answer- That very day.

Question- Do you like reading the Paper on the iPad?
Answer- Now that I can get the entire paper, you bet.

Bonus Question- So why do you still have a subscription to the dead-tree edition?
Answer- Ask my wife. 🙂

My point is this- when someone first gets the iPad it is neat, fun and new. As many people use it more and more however it takes on a bigger and bigger role in their lives and most people will get their news one way or another but usually not both. Translation… It only makes sense that when people use their iPad for news and like it they will quickly choose to ONLY get their news that way. And if that is the case why WOULD they keep a subscription to the dead-tree editIon?

iPads negatively impacting print subscriptions? Well duh!!!

Papers better get their pay-wall systems in place in a hurry…
