Portable Sound Labsis  the company behind iMainGo, a portable external speaker kit for your portable device such as an iPhone or touch.

They sent me a test unit quite some time ago ,and somehow it made its way into the back of the closet. Since that time they have released an updated iMainGo 2 and now the iMainGo X for more lifestyle integration.

So, why my oversight? To be honest, I do not lead that portable of a lifestyle. Mine is more mobile – actually mostly mobile. When I am not test-driving new cars I am driving a fleet vehicle in my “day” job. And until recently I had all but quit listening to music while driving, I quit listening to anything.

These days I am rediscovering the sound of something other than wind and road noise. And I discovered my fleet vehicle does not have an auxiliary input to plug my iPhone into so that I may enjoy my iTunes music library.

Enter Portable Sound Laboratories and its iMainGo lineup. Plug in my iPhone, switch iMainGo on and select my iPod function on the phone and select my tunes.

Sure there are accessories out there that would allow me to play my iPod through the vehicle stereo system remotely but with iMainGo I can just grab the small portable device wrapped neatly around by iPhone and go when it comes time for mobility to cease and portability to begin.

And the iMainGo line of products is not just to provide an alternative to listening to your device via earbuds or headphones. Plug it into your laptop, plug it into your iPad, plug it into just about anything with a mini headphone jack. The dual speaker system in the iMainGo is designed to enhance overall sound reproduction and deliver a full tonal range. Despite their small size one can actually detect some bass notes coming from the unit. (Key word here being “some”).

I like the fact that rechargeable battery packs are now included with the new units. One thing I would maybe like to see would be this unit working as an alternative power unit for the player device itself.

And on the company website is this teaser for an upcoming version specifically for the iPad. Stay tuned.
