Gear Diary A Sneak Peak at the Tycoon Windows 7 Tablet photo

Thanks to Apple’s iPad juggernaut, just about everyone is planning on putting out a tablet this year.   While CES confirmed that most will be running Android (3.0/Honeycomb) to battle the current iPad and upcoming iPad2, don’t count out the non-Apple or Google branded tablets.   Today, I received the Tycoon tablet from a Tangent.  The Tycoon runs Windows 7, and is targeted direct at the enterprise business user who wants full office application access in a portable tablet form.

I’ll be putting the Tycoon through its paces over the coming days to see how it stacks up against some of the other tablets available — namely the iPad and Samsung Galaxy S.   Interestingly, one of my ‘day job’ projects entails bringing more tablets into the enterprise for our own corporate users and applications.   It will be interesting to see all the Tycoon will bring to the boardroom table.  What follows is a photo gallery of the Tycoon next to the iPad and Samsung Galaxy S tab.

I’m 99.9% sure you are going to cover these, but I still want to ask:
What is the battery life and how does it compare to the others? (like I said, 99.9% sure you were already going to cover this)
Any external buttons (and why are there apparently three different status lights)?
Is Swype, or something comparable included?

Hi @n_finite. Second day with the unit. A lot of the questions should e addressed in a full review Still just putting the Tycoon tablet through initial paces, so I may not be able to answer everything in less than 24 hrs of having it in my hands :-) External buttons: Power, WiFi/Bluetooth (yep, one button for both…). There are actually 4 LED indicators; for Webcam, WiFi/Bluetooth access, Battery Charging, Drive Access and Power Indicator. I can tell you that you can connect a wired keyboard and mouse to the Tycoon for ‘full’ PC use. There are also 6 external ports: one for a 3-direction switch, Microphone Jack, Headphone Jack, Two USB 2.0 ports and a VGA port. More info to come :-)

Interesting form factor. How does the weight “feel” compared to an iPad?

One thing I’ve noticed about Kindles and nooks is that the weight is so low compared to an iPad, it’s much easier to cart around. As light as the iPad is compared to, say, a laptop, it’s still a little hefty for my tastes.

Hey Doug, sorry for the delay (office drone here:D). The Tycoon is definitely not as light as a Kindle or Nook. It is also (slightly) heavier than an iPad. Honestly, I probably need to really just weigh it to give a true answer on lbs. Will have more details in the coming days :-)
