Last night while viewing to the RadioAndroid.net show I was able to be part of something pretty special. It’s been a while since I was able to listen in on the show but I’m certainly glad this was the one I was able to attend. The show starts at 10pm on the east coast, so I don’t usually have time to watch the whole thing, except this time there was an essay contest in which I was able to participate. The contest winner would receive a LG G2X as a prize if selected as the winner. I figured not many would write in with an essay so my chances should be pretty good. In the end I did not win this contest but feel that the winner was more deserving anyway, so I’m glad it turned out the way it did.

The contest is really not the reason that made last night’s show special. I saw on twitter that there would be an auction/donation on the show to help fight Autism. After listening for about an hour to a guest (Rob Gorski) on the show who happens to be a father of 3 autistic children, and an a wife who suffers from Fibromyalgia I wanted to at least donate something for this amazing cause. His story was one that only heroes speak of, and after hearing him speak, I could not understand how one man could bear such a heavy burden. His story was very inspiring and it was easy to see that the entire chatroom was heavily impacted from all the comments posted. I think it was a perfect introduction to the auctions, something to really fuel the listeners to get out their wallet and donate to help people like his family. There was an amazing amount of prizes and donations from many big names in the Android Community and mobile industry. I was lucky enough to edge out and win an auction for a small contribution to help with Autism, but the biggest auction was won by an active Android member who goes by @bedwa on twitter. I have been following Bedwa for a while, and know he is an accomplished Kernel Developer among other things. Now he joins the noble ranks of those willing to give to a great charity.

His auction donation consisted of a $900 donation to the charity, which I believe he said will be taken as an early pull from some of his 401K plan. Never in my life have I seen so much goodness come from a group of Android fanatics. The show simply went crazy after he confirmed his bid for the $900 after a long spell not having anyone write or call in with a bid. The final auction almost ended without a bidder and would have continued on to next week’s show after a plan to add another week of spreading the word. Almost randomly Bedwa stepped up and threw down almost a $1000 of cold hard cash to support the cause. I have never in my life seen a chatroom full of geeks be so selfless and donate to the a cause like this. At the end of the night $1700 was raised in total. Thanks to everyone who made it happen, everyone who donated, and everyone who participated in the show. Just another reason that I’m quite happy to be part of the Android Community.

I have been a tech fanatic and gadget guru ever since I can remember. I started building computers at a young age and have been doing so ever since. Im a big fan of all things mobile but spend most of my time with Android when it comes to phones and Tablets. I like to spend my free time at the gun range, in the garage, or playing games.
