Headline aside, the timing of B&N’s financials and the announcement of exclusive Peanuts content for the NOOKcolor is a coincidence. But it does nicely highlight the positives and negatives B&N is facing as we head into a world without Borders.
The real positive in B&N’s report is, of course, the NOOK. Sales were up 140%, and the latest projections puts NOOK marketshare at around 30%, which is amazing considering that B&N doesn’t have the deep pockets or entrenched online presence that Amazon does! They’re also projecting significant sales from Borders old customers, which doesn’t surprise me. Borders didn’t do enough business to stay viable, but they did have plenty of customers, and those customers have to go somewhere!
Of course, the flipside is that the specter of Borders is still hanging over B&N. Yes, Borders had issues above and beyond the shrinking book market, but it’s still something facing B&N and their 1,000+ stores (between B&N Superstores and college bookstores). They have a tough balancing act ahead of them as they attempt to grown the NOOK business while also driving customers towards physical books and stores.

Meanwhile, the NOOKcolor is getting a little extra love from B&N, with exclusive digital Peanuts comics! And if Peanuts aren’t your thing, there’s always the American Girl Series, or Bejeweled…the point is, it’s been a big week for content on the NOOKcolor! Check out B&N’s full press release below!
