After Months of iOS 5.0 Beta, Newsstand Finally Works

Since the very first beta of iOS 5.0, there has been a useless icon that simply sat there. Yes, the Newsstand icon was there … and there was absolutely nothing you could do with it. You could not delete it because it is an iOS app. You could not shove it into a folder because… Well, because you couldn’t. And there were no magazines or newspapers to populate it. Such is the reality of using Beta software.

Well, just now that changed…

An update to Wired magazine moved my subscription into Newsstand. Look, I love Zinio, but having all my magazines in one place???? That sounds kind of neat. I’ll have a comparison of Zinio and Newsstand in the near future.

About the Author

Dan Cohen
Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. Dan is married to Raina Goldberg who is also an avid user of Apple products. They live in New Jersey with their golden doodle Nava.

hey Dan- hasnt Zinio always given you all of your magazines (and even the 4,990 you dont have yet) in one place called The Zinio Reader? And across any operating platform?

    • I have to admit that I am curious about this, too. Unless the Apple Newsstand somehow works with Zinio content, it’s not going to be of much use to me … similarly to how iBooks hasn’t been. I’m Zinio for magazines and Amazon Kindle for books, all the way. =)
