As much as I “harshed” on Evernote last week after they released two ridiculous iPhone apps the service remains a key part of every aspect of my life. I’ve also turned countless people onto Evernote, and many find it invaluable as well. Others however, underutilize the service and, as a result, don’t see what the big deal is. That’s where Evernote Essentials: The Definitive Getting Started Guide for Evernote by Brett Kelly comes in. As Brett explains:

The amount of information we want and need to keep track of today is, frankly, ridiculous. Not long ago, my desk was covered with piles of financial statements, medical records, automotive service receipts — and that didn’t even include everything dealing with my job. We all struggle to keep our information organized and accessible, but without the right tool for the job, it can seem impossible. Thankfully, a tool like Evernote excels at doing exactly that — it’s a single place to organize everything that’s important to you. The tricky part is learning how best to use it so that all of those bits of information are a few clicks away when you need them.

We reached out to Brett and asked him to consider sharing a few additional tips that aren’t in the book. He sent along a few and we’ll be sharing the over the course of the next few days. Here’s the first-

New neighbors: When you make a new friend or a new neighbor moves in, lots of people (myself included) have trouble remembering not only their names, but also any other details they may have dropped during the initial interaction (work they do, spouse/kid names, etc.). Drop these into Evernote.

What’s great about this approach is that, later, when you have forgotten some of the things you learned about them refreshing your memory is as close as the Evernote search window. And, if you snapped a shot of anything that has text, that text becomes searchable too. With a lot of turnover happening n my neighborhood right now I think this is a tip I’ll actually be using!

Evernote Essentials is a must for new Evernote users and has something to teach those who are more seasoned too.

His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. Dan is married to Raina Goldberg who is also an avid user of Apple products. They live in New Jersey with their golden doodle Nava.
