Will Paula Deen Switch to Lite Cooking?

When I think of Paula Deen, I think fried food. Lots and lots of fried food. And any number of satires about how unhealthy her cooking is. But if a rumor from The Daily is to be believed, Paula may be facing the fact that she needs to change her diet. Apparently she, like many Americans, has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes.

According to the report:

The Georgia-born chef — a Food Network star who has written five best-selling cookbooks — has been trying to keep her condition a secret, even after the National Enquirer reported in April that she has Type 2 diabetes, which is often associated with fatty foods and obesity.

Sources say Deen, 64, who never addressed the diabetes question, has worked out a multimillion-dollar deal to be the spokeswoman for a pharmaceutical company and endorse the drug she is taking.

Novartis, the drug company she is said to be working for, declined to respond to Flash’s questions, as did Deen’s agent and Deen herself.

“Paula Deen is going to have to reposition herself now that she has diabetes,” said one source. “She’s going to have to start cooking healthier recipes. She can’t keep pushing mac and cheese and deep-fried Twinkies when she is hawking a diabetes drug.”

First of all, Hostess is going bankrupt, so deep-fried Twinkies are already on the endangered list. But it will be interesting to see if this changes the Paula Deen brand name. I don’t wish diabetes on anyone, and I hope Paula Deen stays healthy and is able to take care of herself. She is a very well-known cooking personality though, and if she adapts her recipes and style to address healthier recipes that would be fantastic and hopefully have a positive impact on people’s diets!

Just be sure to check with your doctor about what diabetes medicine is right for you…don’t use celebrity endorsement as a guide!

  1. Her son Bobby Deen has a new show on the Cooking Channel titled: Not my Mama’s Cooking.  He takes his Mom’s recipes and remakes them into something a bit healthier.  He starts of with some of her desserts, namely the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding.  He replaced the Krispy Kremes with Whole Wheat donuts that only had 8 grams of fat and reduced the sugar, added fruit and there ya go.  It was an interesting show.  Season ticketed it myself not that I ate a lot of Paula’s decadent recipes!
