As it turns out, the rumors were true, and B&N has released a $199 NOOK Tablet with 8GB of storage (the 16GB option is still available at $249). I really thought this was the end of the line for the NOOKcolor, but that tablet is still going strong, with a price cut to $169. While $149 would have really been competitive, this is still a nice lineup for them, with multiple devices and price points to showcase in their stores.
One interesting tidbit-the original NOOK Tablet came with only 1GB free for the user (the remaining space was devoted to B&N’s content). These new tablets are being shipped with more internal memory for users, and according to The Digital Reader, starting in early March you will be able to bring your original NOOK Tablet to B&N to have that extra memory unlocked for personal use without rooting. Speaking of rooting, the NOOK Tablet is hackable, so if you’re looking for a cheap tablet these are an excellent choice!
Overall, B&N has a strong lineup heading into spring, which is important since the NOOK business was yet again the standout in last quarter’s financials! Book sales may be moribund, but at least NOOKs are flying off the (digital) shelves!
