The Android Market has been around for a while now, but Google has begun using it for more than just Android apps; they have added Music, Movies and Books over the last year.  So, in an effort to unify things a bit and get a less ambiguous name that describes the service, Google is re-branding the Android Market as Google Play.  The website is active now, and the Android Market app on your devices will be replaced with the Google Play Store app.  You can also expect to see updates today for the Books, Music and Movies applications.

  1. So they name it something associated primarily with games … which are unique to Android.

I’m not sure there is any further comment needed.  Except perhaps that they DIDN’T name it Qriocity … 😉

    • Play works for Music, Games and Video but there’s so much more.  I think the goal was just to take the word Android out of it because everything except the games worked just fine in a browser or on a Chromebook.

      • Yeah, kinda … but really it is a sadly generic and completely non-business friendly term likely to end up blocked by many companies.

You PLAY games, WATCH video, LISTEN to music, and READ books.

I do get the need to diversify, but it also dissociates from the Android name in a rather interesting way.
