Lately I’ve been in a funk. I thought, at first, it was an Apple funk. I thought it might be about the fact that Apple today doesn’t seem to have the same excitement and vision as it did under Steve Jobs. I thought it might be about a sequence of products that is becoming very evolutionary instead of revolutionary. I thought it was about Apple and where it might be heading.
But it’s more than that. It’s about where the mobile industry as a whole is heading. It’s about what kinds of things we think are important (and it’s not about the gadgets anymore). It’s kind of a “sick of the whole mobile platform wars” funk. Yeah – not good for a gadget guy.
He called it a funk… I call it bored so Mike and I asked the question… Are We Bored Yet? Here’s our answer.
LOL – love it! You guys should have included me in the conversation since you kept referring to me! So now I will say a couple of things:
First – I do like the Nexus 7, I think it’s a decent device for the price, but remember I had a specific reason for getting it – to maintain access to apps I had on my work phone. It wasn’t so much about being excited or bored. That said, you’ll see my comments about it (good and bad) in a post soon. The form factor definitely has it’s place, but I know I would want an iPad that size because I still think there is something about the whole Android ecosystem that feels terrible immature – especially in the app arena – compared to the iOS infrastructure.
Also, in reference to my “funk” – despite the comments, it is not really about boredom. It has been more than that or, more correctly, a little different than that. It’s kind of dissatisfaction with where the industry and commentary on it has gone. Manufacturers seem to be more interested in suing each other than producing good products. Bloggers seem more interested in reporting on the “dirt” than on the products. Commenters are more interested in one-upping each other than making truly useful comments. We’ve stopped focusing on the things we used to and the things I think are important in this business, and that is unfortunate. So we need to make sure we keep talking about the good things, yes?
That said, I don’t mind being bored. After all, Toyota sells a lot of Camrys – right?
Another interesting note: My brother was considering moving to an iPhone. We went to the Apple Store to look at them. I suggested me might want to wait for the new one. He asked for a description of the new one and I told him and I indicated that it might look similar but vertically elongated. He was actually disappointed by that – he likes the current 4/4s body.
