I was in Havana last week with two dozen members of my community; we were there as part of a “religious mission”, which meant that we brought down supplies to share with the aging members of the Cuban Jewish Community and spent time learning about the history of Cuba, the Jewish community in Cuba, and even the architecture of Havana. That was the “serious stuff”.

For fun, among other things, we spent time “car watching”. I couldn’t believe the American cars from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s that are still on the road. It was nothing short of impressive. Here’s a look at some of the things we saw along the way…

Here are a few more…

Dan Cohen
Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. Dan is married to Raina Goldberg who is also an avid user of Apple products. They live in New Jersey with their golden doodle Nava.

  1. Cool. 🙂

It’s funny that we consider seeing such things rare when in Cuba it’s every day and they don’t really have much choice about it either.

It’s easy to see why though. No snow and no need for salting the roads means that the bodies will last a LONG time in Cuba. The mechanics though are something completely different. Amazing to see this. There must me some amazing mechanics in Cuba!

    • I remember reading about the pre-Revolution US cars a few years back, and you are right…the agreeable Cuban climate allowed them a very long lifespan. Those autos were built to last and the Cuban mechanics quite inventive.

    “Great Post”

Are these cars like original matching numbers cars?

  3. If we ever open up trade with Cuba again, I’ll be hopping on the first flight, and importing a 50s era convertible back stateside.
