Our own Carly Z recently wrote a post about the price drop for the Barnes and Noble Nook, on which I commented that I thought it was a smart move, given the recent release of the iPad Mini. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I’m starting to see news items in the Gear Diary in-box about apps being released specifically for B&N. B&N clearly is making a play for the smaller tablet market, and I think it’s smart. One of the apps moving over to the nook is the Nosy Crow set of children’s apps:
Independent children’s book and app publisher Nosy Crow is pleased to announce plans to release its multi-award winning programme of storybook and game apps on the Android platform. In early November, two apps, Rounds: Franklin Frog and Pip and Posy: Fun and Games, will be available on Barnes & Noble’s US NOOK Storefront (www.nook.com) for play on the new NOOK® HD and NOOK® HD+ tablets. These same apps will be available on Barnes & Noble’s UK NOOK Storefront (www.nook.co.uk) in mid-November. Additional Nosy Crow apps will be available on NOOK® in 2013.
The NOOK editions of the two apps represent the first expansion into the Android platform for Nosy Crow, who have previously developed exclusively for iOS. For its existing apps, the company has been recognised with a Publishing Innovation Award, Junior Design Award, FutureBook Innovation Award, KAPi Award, iLounge Award, IPG Independent Publishing Award, and countless other reviews and commendations from parenting, media and technology bodies, and consumers.
Rounds: Franklin Frog is the first app in an innovative new series about the life-cycles of animals, recommended for children aged 3-7. Children can participate in every stage of Franklin’s life, from birth to parenthood. The app is filled with fun facts about frogs carefully designed to inspire enthusiasm and teach young children about biology. USA Today rated Rounds: Franklin Frog with four out of four stars, saying, “It is fabulous. We can’t wait for the next one.”
Pip and Posy: Fun and Games, by Axel Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo, is the companion app to the popular picture book series about the dramas of toddler life, recommended for children aged 2 and up. Filled with beautiful artwork by Scheffler and featuring an original score by BAFTA-winner Robin Beanland and lively child narration, Pip and Posy: Fun and Games brings the lovable best friends to life with lots of exciting content.
Availability and Pricing
Rounds: Franklin Frog and Pip and Posy: Fun and Games will be available in early November on the US NOOK Storefront (www.nook.com) for NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ and priced at $4.99 and $2.99 respectively. The apps will be available on the UK NOOK Storefront (www.nook.co.uk) in mid-November and priced at £2.99 for Rounds: Franklin Frog and £1.99 for Pip and Posy: Fun and Games.
Got a Nook but been a little irked about the dearth of apps, especially for your kids? Maybe this is what you’ve been looking for. Surf on over and check it out and, if you download an app or two, be sure to share you experience with us below!
