Gear Diary Make Every Holiday Gift Give Back to Charity with Goodshop.com, Goodsearch.com and Gooddining.com photo

I have often thought that people would be a lot more willing to give to various causes if it were simpler, more automatic.  After all, we pay for a ton of stuff on a monthly basis just by checking the “automated payment” box on bill sites; maybe there’s some way to do something similar with charitable donations, right?  GoodSearch thinks so:

With the economic recovery slow, people are looking for ways to support their favorite cause that will not affect their pocketbook. In fact, according to barna.org, 41% of people have cut back on their charitable donations this year. Americans are faced with a dilemma, whether to support their favorite cause or buy holiday gifts.  Goodshop.com offers an easy way they can do both. Here is how it works:

At Goodshop.com, each time someone clicks through from Goodshop to one of the 2,800 plus participating stores (including Amazon, Target, Toys R Us, Sephora, Macy’s PetCo and more), an average of 4% of the purchase price is donated to the shopper’s favorite cause (at no cost to them!). Plus, Goodshop.com has over 100,000 coupons so users can save money while giving back.

More than 108,000 nonprofits and schools have partnered with online shopping mall Goodshop.com, including many in your area. What makes the system so compelling is that it doesn’t cost the users a thing.  It’s a form of philanthropy that works for everyone in this economy!

Goodshop.com has two partner programs: Yahoo!-powered search engine Goodsearch.com and Gooddining.com, which both also enable their supporters to generate donations just by doing something they do anyway everyday:

Goodsearch.com:  Each time someone searches the internet with Goodsearch (powered by Yahoo!), about a penny is raised for the charity or school of their choice!  You use it exactly as you would any other search engine.

Gooddining.com: Each time someone dines at more than 10,000 Gooddining.com restaurants across the country, up to 6% of the cost of the meal is donated to the diner’s favorite cause.

These sites have raised more than $9 million to date – money that’s been used to help find a cure for cancer, clean up our oceans, feed homeless pets, send children with disabilities to summer camp, and more!

The sites have become an online sensation as people want to make “doing good” a part of their everyday lives.  Their popularity has grown through word of mouth, social media, and the support of celebrities including Jessica Biel, Montel Williams, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Jeff Bridges, and others, who have urged their fans to use the sites to support the causes they care about.

Internet users have found Goodshop to be a great idea.  Dawn Feston, a decorator in Los Angeles, uses Goodshop in support of Best Friends Animal Society, which runs the nation’s largest sanctuary for abused animals.  “This is great. I am doing so much online shopping this year and through Goodshop, I both get discounts and get to support my favorite charity.  There’s really no reason not to Goodshop!”

The Goodshop team is revolutionizing online philanthropy so that everyone can support a cause, even during tough times.  ”With our challenging economy, we are delighted to enable the millions of supporters of our 108,000+ charity and school partners with an easy way to give back as they shop this holiday season, said Scott Garell, CEO of Goodsearch. And, especially helpful this year, is our 100,000 money-saving coupons—so people can save money while supporting their favorite cause. I cannot think of a reason why anybody would not shop at Goodshop.com this year.”

Why don’t you surf on over to these sites and check them out?  And if you do, be sure to tell us about your experiences below!

Doug is a nerd from way back, falling for a Commodore PET at the age of 15, and never looking back. Riding the nerd wave, he got a Computer Science degree and entered the tech industry at a young age, deciding after a year and a half of front-line phone technical support that he should try something, *anything* else. He settled on technical writing, and has been cranking out documentation for companies like Unisys, SGI, Cisco, Juniper, and many others ever since. He is nothing short of ecstatic to be working for H-P from his home base in Austin.
