Gear Diary Miffy in the Snow Comes to iPad photo

I find it interesting that some items that are specifically targeted at young kids are also taken up–in a semi-ironic way–by teens. (I think it’s only “semi” ironic because I think a lot of teens, even thought it may be subconscious, want to keep a bit of a foot in the world of being a kid.  I know I did; I took my teddy bear to college with me.)  Miffy is a good example.  I do like the clean, simple lines of the Miffy characters–reminds me a lot of Charles Schulz’s style.  And I have seen plenty of Miffys on my daughter’s friends backpacks and T-shirt and what not.  And now there’s a new Miffy iPad app–will teens in addition to little kids go for it, too?  Check it out:

Mercis bv, the Dutch company that owns the copyright to MIFFY and FRIENDS and is the brand’s worldwide licensor, today announced the launch of the fourth Miffy application for iPad, “Miffy in the Snow.” ($4.99, Ages 2-up) The app was created in conjunction with Sanoma Media Netherlands and is available in Dutch and English.

Based on Dick Bruna’s story book, “Miffy in the Snow” is an entertaining and educational iPad app developed especially with young children and toddlers in mind. Very young children will enjoy just listening to and watching the story, whereas older children can play the interactive games. Together they can enjoy Dick Bruna’s distinctive, brightly-colored illustrations. They also can record their voice as they read aloud, and engage with interactive games, including sending an e-card to family and friends.

Interactive, educational and fun, the new Miffy app includes the following features:

  • The “Miffy in the Snow” story, where Miffy sleds over the mountains, finds a bird and builds it a birdhouse
  • Ability to read aloud and record your voice

Three different games to play:

  • Throwing Snowballs: Knock the hat off the snowman by throwing snowballs at it. The arrow shows you the direction in which to throw the snowball.
  • Memory: Find the same pictures and they will disappear from the screen.
  • Create Your Own E-Card: Choose the pictures, create your own design, color it in and send the illustration as an e-card!

Miffy is the iconic star of Dick Bruna’s classic children’s books and the public television series “Miffy and Friends,” which The New Yorker recently described as “stunningly peaceful” and “beautiful.”

The new “Miffy in the snow” iPad app is available on iTunes for an MSRP of $3.99.  Surf on over and check it out, and if you (or your ironical teen) downloads it, be sure to let us know what you think below!
