Gear Diary Incipio Stowaway for iPhone 5 Video Review photo

This is the second of three Incipio iPhone five case reviews we have going up. The first case was a simple slider case that didn’t offer much excitement. This time out we’re taking a look at the Incipio Stowaway for iPhone 5. It is a far more compelling case thanks to two unique features hidden away in its seemingly simple design. First, this case can also function as a wallet. It will hold three credit or ID cards. Second, the door of the “wallet” can double as a stand for viewing the iPhone in landscape. Here’s a look.

Features:

  • Rigid Plextonium™ shell with impact resistant core
  • Holds ID and credit cards
  • Built-in Kickstand
  • Excellent shock absorption

This case struck me as being a far more interesting and potentially useful then some of the simple slider cases we’ve seen. It is surprisingly thin for a case that also doubles as a wallet. Perhaps more importantly, it won’t be obvious to the casual observer that this iPhone case is functioning as your wallet. That’s a good thing! My biggest issue with this particular case is the design of the back door. It feels a bit flimsy and strikes me as trying a bit too hard. I would much prefer to see the company market this iPhone case as a wallet and include one of their simple but functional black foldable stands.

I do appreciate the fact that the company includes both front and rear protection for your iPhone.

What’s Inside:

  • (1) Rear Film Protector
  • (1) Clear Screen Protector
  • Microfiber Cleaning Cloth
  • Applicator Card

Such additional items certainly add to the value of this case.

If you are looking for a simple plastic case that offers decent bump protection and can function as your wallet this is a good option. A better option, however, is the third case we will be looking at in this series of three reviews.

What Needs Improvement: Hinge of the back door feels a bit flimsy

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him.

Ok, if it doesn’t increase too much thickness, it may be a good case. I read the newsletter and want to win this case.

Looks pretty neat; seems like there’s enough room in there for my RFID transit and Starbucks cards. I read the newsletter and want to win this case.
