Gear Diary DISH Introduces Hopper with Sling and Hopper Transfers photo

Oh CES, you bring us so much tasty tech goodness!  Not just new gadgets, but new and improved ways in which existing gadgets and software can work together.  For example, if you remember the ol’ Slingbox concept, you might have wondered to yourself, “Self, in what way could this be improved, maybe with some cleaner way to deal with my satellite company and an easier way to handle everything?”  Well, tell yourself that someone’s been working on that, because Dish has just introduced the Hopper™ with Sling®, the second generation of its award-winning Whole-Home HD DVR system. Now you can

  • Watch live and recorded television anywhere on Internet-connected tablets, smartphones and PCs at no additional charge
  • Move recorded television to an iPad for viewing without an Internet connection
  • Transform your TVs into a home media hub with new multi-player gaming apps and the ability to ‘fling’ photos, videos and music from a mobile device

Now, at the ol’ Moran household, we don’t have cable or a satellite connection; we watch our video on our iPads, laptops, and iPhones, mostly.  So being able to move content back and forth between platforms, well, that’s some tech goodness, don’t you think?

Sound interesting?  Then wander on by the DishTV site and check it out!  And if you do, be sure to let us know what you think below!

Doug is a nerd from way back, falling for a Commodore PET at the age of 15, and never looking back. Riding the nerd wave, he got a Computer Science degree and entered the tech industry at a young age, deciding after a year and a half of front-line phone technical support that he should try something, *anything* else. He settled on technical writing, and has been cranking out documentation for companies like Unisys, SGI, Cisco, Juniper, and many others ever since. He is nothing short of ecstatic to be working for H-P from his home base in Austin.

Thanks for taking the time to post on this news, Douglas. I’ve been a fan of Sling for a long time, but DISH Anywhere takes it to a new level. My son gets off from school before my shift at DISH ends, and he has to hang out in the cafeteria with his friends until I get there. Lately, they have been keeping occupied using DISH Anywhere to stream live TV or DVR recordings on his tablet. They seem happy because they can watch TV on the go, and I’m happy because the parental controls set on our Hopper, apply to the app as well ;)
