Samsung GALAXY Note 8.0 – It’s a Handful!

For the past few weeks I’ve been using a Samsung GALAXY Note 2 on and off. I’ve been quite surprised how impressed I am with the huge phone/diminutive tablet. Sure, it’s a bit too large and clunky to really qualify as a phone but, after using it for a while, it actually doesn’t seem overly large. It has a huge beautiful screen and I am absolutely wowed by the S-Pen. Mike didn’t love the Note 2 and was critical of the limited number of apps that work with the included pen. I’m not nearly as troubled by it. No,…

HP Slate7 Marks HP’s Return to the Tablet Market

HP’s journey into tablet-dom didn’t turn out all too well the first time. Sure their tablet running WebOS gained some traction, but that was only after they dropped down to fire sale prices. Well Mobile World Congress in Barcelona just saw HP announce their return to the tablet market. This time out HP is going with the time-tested Android operating system and the budget price of just $169. Will they have a winner on their hands? Only time will tell. The HP Slate7 promises to be an affordable Android Jelly Bean tablet sporting a sweet spot 7″ diagonal screen. Designed…

Toast iPad mini Cover is Gorgeous Wood iPad mini Protection

Carly recently reviewed Toast’s Wooden iPhone Cover for the iPhone 4S. She liked it… a lot. (Read the review.) The company was also kind enough to send along one of their Toast iPad covers. The Toast iPad mini cover is laser-cut and made from real wood. They are designed to both protect and enhance the look of the iPad mini. The Toast iPad mini Cover I received was made from walnut and had a squid etched into it. I tend to prefer a plain panel but have to admit the squid design looks pretty neat. I really love the company’s…

iPad mini Size vs Price – Which Drove Its Success?

The rumor mill is flying with word that a so-called ‘iPhone mini’ is on the way. Most suggestions have the new offering from Apple being mini in price but not necessarily mini in size. That’s too bad, since a smaller, lighter iPhone would actually make sense for someone like me who never leaves home without his iPad mini. All the arguments for the iPhone mini seem to hinge on Apple shifting from offering older models of iPhones at steep discounts to the company actually releasing a phone with less costly components — this might include anything from a return to…

Seagate Wireless Plus Lets You Take Your Data With You, Review

We first saw Seagate’s GoFlex Satellite Wireless Storage device at CES 2011. (Read the Review) In March of 2012 we announced that the company was releasing a firmware update for the GoFlex Satellite that made it faster and more convenient. (Read the post.) Now Seagate has released their Wireless Plus. It lets you stream media and files to a variety of devices including tablets, smartphones and computers. The Seagate Wireless Plus can store and carry over 500 movies or thousands of songs, photos and documents. And, thanks to the free Seagate Media app- available for iPad, iPhone, Kindle Fire and…

Might & Magic Clash of Heroes for iPad Review

I remember when Might & Magic Clash of Heroes for the Nintendo DS arrived. It was an oddity of a game in that I was immediately prepared to hate – a new game for a new platform by a new developer in a totally unrelated genre with a familiar name; I was like most fans of the original feeling that it was likely someone was trying to cash in by attaching a familiar name to a mediocre game. So imagine my surprise when I called Might & Magic Clash of Heroes ‘one of the best DS games of 2009’ in a…

PlayStation 4 Specifications Answer Some Questions

The PlayStation 4 specifications have been released after the initial February 20 announcement from Sony. Still no backwards compatibility…for any PlayStation 3 game, but services will be available to stream PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. One of my biggest questions was answered – the disc drive. Game format will be downloadable and optical disc. The “cloud”-like downloading trend made me wonder if the PS4 would even have a disc drive. Another big one – No DualShock 3 controller support. The new DualShock 4 controller will have a special lightbar so the new PlayStation 4 camera can track the controller’s 3D…

Cablevision vs FiOS – Choosing Bundled Cable Options

We are finally getting close to moving into our new home, and of course my number one priority is getting the Internet up and running. There are two choices for our area, Cablevision or Verizon FiOS, and both are relatively similar. We had both at our old house, so we are fairly familiar with the customer service pros and cons of both. The bigger issue is the labyrinth of bundled deals available. How do you determine which deal is the right one? I called both companies to get more information, and was very surprised by the results! First, I made…

Incipio Stanley Technician Case for iPhone 5 Review

When I purchase a case for my phone, the most important quality for me is durability — how well the case will protect my phone.  I’ve had my fair share of phone accidents including drop kicking my iPhone under my car, knocking it out the window, and accidentally leaving it on the floor for my dog to mistake as a chew toy.    The Incipio Stanley Technician Case for iPhone 5 is a rugged case that has a rigid plextonium frame (not quite sure what that is, but it sounds tough), impact resistant semi-rigid NGP soft shell core (also sounds good), and…

2013 Honda Accord Touring in the Grinding Gears Garage

The Honda Accord is one of the longest running nameplates from a Japanese automaker on the roads of America today. Model year 2013 marks the start of the ninth-generation of the popular midsize sedan, and it offers not only coupe and sedan variants but a new plugin hybrid version as well. Honda is celebrating 30 years of Accord production in the United States with this newest Accord that has been given a complete makeover. The new car is described as crisper and will redefine sophistication, efficiency, and driving joy in the midsize class. While interior space remains the same in…

Ultima Forever Quest for the Avatar Gets a First Video Preview

There are classics, and then there are CLASSICS … and Ultima IV is one of the absolute classics in all of gaming. I have played it several times through the years, but owing to age and technology changes it is a difficult game for younger gamers to really enjoy. Now it is coming back as Ultima Forever Quest for the Avatar, launching on iOS in the spring of 2013. We have known about the game for a while, but now we get some first looks and a video sneak peek! Much of the classic Ultima world is maintained, though now…

Billboard Joins the 21st Century by Tracking YouTube View Data

While the top videos on MTV and YouTube (recently at least) have generally also been on the pop charts, the amount of popularity from video outlets hasn’t always translated into chart position. So it is great news for breakout video artists this week as Billboard joins the 21st century and starts tracking YouTube view data as part of compiling its ‘Hot 100’ list of pop music. While for many tech-centric people this seems like a ‘no duh’ sort of decision, it wasn’t until 2012 that most of the popular videos on YouTube were commercially created rather than amateur ‘viral’ videos….

Chromebook Pixel – A Bad Idea?

Chromebooks have been a bit of a mixed bag for many people. Some users love the idea of a lightweight, browser-focused operating system, and others feel like a computer that just runs browser apps is a waste of money. When Chromebooks occupied the $199-$300 space, they fit a niche as a lightweight “secondary machine”. Yesterday Google branched out in a shocking new direction, announcing the touchscreen, high-resolution, Chromebook Pixel. A touchscreen Chromebook is big news all by itself, but the price is really generating buzz. At $1,299 for the WiFi model, is Google overestimating the appeal of ChromeOS? The Gear…

Amazon Kindle Paper White Commercial a Sign of the Times

Amazon’s new Kindle Paper White commercial shows just how far we have come in a relatively short period of time. Allow me to offer a bit of personal background. A little over a decade ago, a debate raged within my religious movement regarding rabbis officiating at ceremonies celebrating same-sex couples. My position on it was clear, and I told my Board of Directors. One of my most stalwart supporters, a man whose wisdom guided me on many issues, disagreed strongly and went so far as to almost beg me to vote otherwise or, at the minimum, to abstain. I respectfully told…

Trina Turk iPhone 5 Case Review – Fashionable & Fun Protection

When we were walking the aisles at CES, there was one booth that stood out like a bright sunflower in a field of hay; that booth belonged to M-Edge, and the items that caught my eye were their new mobile accessories designed by Trina Turk. I love the fact that Trina Turk is designing such eye-popping cases for the iPhone 5 and other Apple devices; pictures just don’t do the bright colors and pleasing textures justice. The Trina Turk iPhone 5 case by M-Edge is a dual layer system that couples a brightly colored protective soft silicone inner case with a hard plastic outer…

Kaufmann Mercantile EDC (Everyday Carry) – MacGyver Approved

I was a big fan of the show MacGyver when I was younger. It was amazing to watch as week after week MacGyver would find himself locked in a Siberian prison or similarly nasty situation and save himself and others by turning a dinner tray, a toothpick, a paperclip and some string into a hang glider. Okay, maybe he wasn’t THAT good but he was impressive in his ability to take ordinary objects and turn them into the tools he needed. No doubt there were more than a few times when MacGyver would have benefited from having the Kaufmann Mercantile ECD…

Picashare Picasa Sync iOS App Review

I hate synching my devices to computers. It’s much simpler to use iCloud and Photostream than it is to fire up the beast that is iTunes these days. In an all-iOS environment, this works great. But if I have a number of photos that need to be edited in Picasa, it’s a pain to download what I need from Photostream or email them back and forth to myself. Picashare for iOS can upload photos to Picasa and Google+, but does it really make life that much easier? Read on for the full review! Picashare is pretty simple. Log in with…

Mophie Juice Pack Helium for iPhone 5 Review

I truly wish smartphone battery technology would improve to the point that companies like mophie would not be needed. Unfortunately for us- and fortunately for companies like mophie- I don’t see that happening any time soon. That’s why there is a huge potential market for the new mophie juice pack helium. The mophie juice pack helium is 13% thinner than any of the company’s previous iPhone battery cases and adds 1500mAh of additional battery to the current generation power-sucking iPhone. The company was kind enough to send one for review. Let’s take a look and see if this $79.95 battery…
