Gear Diary DBoom Bluetooth Speaker 34 001

In a world of same-same Bluetooth speakers, Musemini’s DBoom speaker is looking to stand out in terms of looks and features. From a looks perspective, the speaker comes in five different colors: it will soon offer the added ability to create custom skins that give a unique look to the front and back of each speaker. From a technology and feature perspective, the DBoom sports both Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC (Near Field Communication) that makes pairing the speaker to any NFC-enabled device quick and simple. Add in the ability to Daisy-chain the speaker, and you have a versatile unit that will offer hours and hours of audio enjoyment.

There is, as you can see, a lot to like about this speaker. That is especially the case if you don’t want your Bluetooth speaker looking like everyone else’s.

Interestingly, for a speaker that is all about visual customization, the DBoom ships in as plain a package as you will find. The window in the top is a nice touch, but it doesn’t add to any sort of excitement when first looking at the speaker.

Inside the box you will find:

The DBoom Speaker

An Instruction Manual

A Custom Carry Bag

An Audio Cord – 3.5mm

A Micro USB Charger Cord

1 Voucher for Free Skin (Front and Back) for your redemption ($20 Value)

Without the custom skin (more on that in a bit), the front of the DBoom Bluetooth speaker is rather plain. Three buttons sit below the DBoom name. In the center is a call button with a hole for the microphone right below it. On either side of the call button are the next song/volume up and previous song/volume down buttons; there’s nothing fancy going on here.

The DBoom pushes out an impressive 6 watts of sound and is tuned to be heavy on the bass. Yup, this speaker was designed for the generation that is coming in of age wearing Beats By Dre. As such, the company wanted to make sure it ” really puts out some punch”, and it does.

In an unusual twist, the company kept the 2600mAH li-ion battery accessible. It will give you up to 20 hours of playtime on a single charge if you are playing your music at 50% volume. And while I doubt many people will take advantage of it, the accessible battery means you can swap out the battery for a fresh one if you need more battery runtime. Similarly, if you find that after an extended period of time the speaker is no longer holding enough of a charge, you can swap out the battery. It is a nice little touch, although I think it is more a marketing point than something that is an actual benefit to 99% of consumers.

On the back of the speaker is a physical power switch (love that!), a microUSB charging port, a 3.5mm Aux-In port, a 3.5mm Audio Out port, and a small power indicator light. The Audio Out port makes it possible to daisy-chain the DBoom speaker to any other audio device that has a 3.5mm Aux-In port. That means you can get even more volume or even bring Bluetooth to a non-Bluetooth enabled device, with the DBoom acting as both speaker AND Bluetooth connectivity. It is a nice feature that can add to the ways in which you this speaker is useful.

The signature feature of the Musemini DBoom is DBoom Create. Through DBoom Create and Design DBoom’s “exclusive “skin” partner” (which remains a mystery since this feature is not yet live), you will be able to choose from a number of skins or create your own. We’ve seen something similar with cases and, for those who want a truly unique speaker, this will be a selling point. For others this feature will seem to be little more than a gimmick, and since the feature is not yet live there is no way I can describe or pass judgment on the process or the results. Still, if you want a truly unique Bluetooth speaker, this may tip the scales toward the DBoom when shopping for a new accessory.

In all, the Musemini DBoom is a good entry into a crowded market. The speaker sounds good, but it is not going to make audiophiles do backflips. But if you are looking for a Bluetooth speaker that packs a punch, includes NFC, has a user-replacable battery, can be customized, AND is priced under $130, the DBoom is a speaker you’ll want to check out. You can learn more and order yours here on the Musemini website.

What I Like: 6 watts of power; Bluetooth and NFC, Customizable skins

What Needs Improvement: Doesn’t stand out from an audio perspective but also doesn’t fall behind competitors either
