Let’s face it, this whole Ben Affleck as Batman thing has been wayyy overblown, hasn’t it? Nobody thought that Heath Ledger would provide such a legendary performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight, in fact, most of the population who had an opinion on the matter thought that the casting of the Brokeback Mountain star was a joke!
Well, once again, the internet is up in arms and a petition has been posted to Change.org asking Warner Bros. to remove Ben Affleck as Batman from the upcoming Man of Steel sequel. I, for one, am slightly concerned considering what Affleck did with Daredevil, but I also want to give him the benefit of the doubt and see what happens before I start screaming from the mountains. Apparently the news of Affleck as Batman has hit a nerve somewhere. What do you guys think?
Via The Verge.
Name me one film aside from “The Sum of All Fears” where Affleck has done a good job acting. Even in that film, it was a solid but not outstanding performance.
Fans of the Dark Knight series are up in arms because they would rather deal with an unknown possibly good actor than a known bad actor.
You mean OTHER than Argo and the Town.
And compared with Christian Bale, George Clooney and Val Kilmer? Bale overstayed his welcome and the voice was pathetic and annoying, and the other two were a joke.
Well I have to disagree with you on Argo. I thought he did OK, but not great. Of course, I acknowledge that I could have bias against Affleck.
Did not see the Town, so I can’t comment about that one.
I am not a big fan of his, and honestly think he is better behind the camera.
But there is this adulation of Bale that I don’t get. He was refreshing after the post-Keaton turn the series had taken, but he has the acting range of a teaspoon. The Prestige, American Psycho, Terminator Salvation? That is his best stuff, and none of it rises above mediocre, shows nuance or anything of depth.
I think that the recent trilogy succeeded mostly due to the writing and direction of the first, The Joker in the second, and misplaced fan loyalty in the third (which I would place alongside Spider-Man 3 to be honest)
So who knows …
Bale won an academy award for The Fighter.
I thought he was great as Batman – the best of the bunch so far. Affleck was rather subdued in Argo and I think he doesn’t have the range and talent that Bale does. But, like I said, why prejudge him? Let him take a shot and see what he can do. (Also, I don’t think Batman/Bruce Wayne requires all that much range…)
I like Bale as Batman. I think Affleck is a terrible choice for the new Batman. Doubt I’ll see it because of this.
You’d really not see it because of one casting decision? I have a feeling you’ll be buying a ticket, Redboxing, or renting it on-demand at some point.
Everyone thought Michael Keaton would be bad; he was fine.
Give him a chance. If the trailers look bad, don’t go see it. It seems dumb to prejudge a performance he hasn’t given yet.
I completely agree. While I’m not a huge fan of a lot of Affleck’s work, I’d rather wait to see what he does before getting upset.
Keaton was hampered by the direction of Tim Burton, IMO. Not even Michelle Pfeiffer in skin-tight leather could save Batman Returns…
