Do you score your wieners before grilling them? I didn’t even realize that doing so was a “thing”, but it helps your dogs cook evenly while creating nooks that keep your garnishes from sliding off your frank and onto your shirt. That’s kind of cool, right? And it’s easy to do with the Cyclone Spiral Hotdog Slicer, $11.99 from Quirky.

  1. I have done this by hand with a wood skewer and a knife and let me tell you I was a skeptic. Until I tried it. It’s SO good! Especially if you do it with good hot dogs and not those really cheap chicken and pork ones. Only beef dogs for me! Not an every day treat that is for sure but it’s awesome.

Now I may have to look into this gadget though! It’s not hard to do it with a wood skewer but i have messed it up before.

    • I think if I was going to spiral cut a dog, it would need to be with a tool like this; I’d probably wind up cutting myself, otherwise. =P

      • Heh heh! I can see how….but it’s not too bad. I put it on a skewer, hold the knife at an angle and cut spirals as I roll it on a board as I cut it. The biggest problem is poking holes in my fingers with the skewer.

    • I guess this would depend on how often you ate hot dogs…otherwise it would be one of those kitchen implements that gets used once every few years and otherwise sits in the closet collecting dust (like our cherry de-pitter).
Though it’s not as ridiculous as a banana slicer, so there’s that.

      • Yeah, I think the last dog I ate was at Dan’s! We just never buy them. But … we do buy bratwursts on occasion. I don’t think you are supposed to pierce those, though. =)

        • We buy them less. My wife eats them more than I do. When I want them though I usually want to grill them and this is a wonderful way to do it. I didn’t think there would be a taste difference but there sure as heck is.
