I’ve been having issues with Zinio crashing while reading articles on my iPad for several months, and I’ve been patiently waiting for a fix. Last night, after Zinio had crashed yet again, I got a popup saying that the Zinio server I was connected to wasn’t the current server, and that I should remove the Zinio app and reinstall.

Thinking that there was finally a Zinio upgrade available, and that this must be part of the fix, I immediately deleted the app and went to the Apple App Store to redownload it … only to find that the Zinio app is now gone (although it does appear in my purchased items).

I tried looking for it from my iPad, iPhone, and finally from my computer — no joy. However, the Zinio app is still available in the Google Play store and in the Windows Phone Marketplace. I hope that the iOS version of the Zinio app is simply being reworked and that a new version will be uploaded soon, but in the meantime, I can’t help but worry why the app has disappeared.

It also doesn’t help that the customer service inquiry I sent at 7:08 pm CT last night has still not been answered … =/

Update: I found these on Twitter …

And Dan found this on Facebook…

It seems odd that as of this posting there is nothing on their site about the problem. Don’t you think?

Update: I have finally received a reply from Zinio ..

I apologize for the inconvenience.

We want to make you aware of an issue with our recent iOS app update that may be impacting your Zinio experience. This issue affects all users on version 2.5.9, and we have identified that you’re currently on this version.

We released an app update on Tuesday that mistakenly suggests you delete and re-download the app. We currently advise you not to delete your app and simply click “Ok” to dismiss the message. The good news is that the rest of your app experience should be fine, and you can continue to read, browse, and shop for magazines.

Once we have a new version out, we encourage you to update your version of Zinio. If you’ve already deleted the app, don’t worry, you haven’t lost any of your magazines. We ask for your patience while we wait for Apple to approve the updated version. It is our highest priority to get an update app into the marketplace as soon as possible. As always, your magazines are still available on your web reader.

And shortly afterward, an email notification finally came out about the issue:

  1. Here’s what I find odd: Zinio sends emails all the time about magazines to buy. I swear there are times when I have an email a day from them.

But nothing on this? No blast email explaining there’s a hiccup? Not even a message on their website if you pull it up on iOS (instead it directs you to download the non-existent app)? That annoys the crap out of me, Zinio has an email list and they clearly know how to use it. But apparently they’ll only use it to spam/sell, not to communicate a potentially important app problem. Boo!

    • That was also what I was thinking! When Judie asked us about it, I had an email in my inbox from them I hadn’t looked at and thought maybe it pertained to this. But no, another sales pitch.

Worse yet, finding the app even if you downloaded before is non-trivial – if it is a pain for us, imagine for the normal user trying to figure it out!
