Audiovox_inSite_with_KeysAudiovox’s inSite Separation Alarm is just that, a device that alerts you when the tag has been separated from your smartphone by a certain distance.  This super slim device can fit in your wallet or more easily, on your keys.  The inSite might be perfect for those who are always leaving their valuables behind.  The inSite sells for $29.99.

The inSite’s main purpose is to make sure you don’t leave your keys or wallet behind when you leave.  It does this by sounding an alarm on your phone as well as on your inSite device.  How does your phone know it’s been separated from the inSite device?  Well, the free companion iPhone app, of course!

Audiovox’s free inSite app pairs via Bluetooth 4.0 with your inSite device as soon as you put the battery in your inSite device, and they’ll remember each other forever.  However, in order to receive alerts, you’ll have to make sure you open the inSite app each time after your phone has been restarted.  An interesting quirk that all apps like this one seems to have.

The inSite itself.

The inSite device comes with a very handy lanyard that you can use to secure your inSite device to your keys or any other loop.  The inSite device comes as two pieces, the small inSite receiver device as well as a larger credit card sized piece that makes the inSite device large enough to fit snugly in a credit card slot in a wallet.  The inSite device also has a small button one side that is used to ring your smartphone from the inSite device.

Another use of the inSite device is to find your keys or your phone.  When the two devices are in range of one another, you’re able to use either one to ring the other.  So, if you’re looking for your keys, you can open up the inSite app on your phone, select “Ring Device,” and the inSite device connected to your keys will start to beep.  Or, if you can’t find your phone, you can press the small button on the inSite device and your phone will start ringing as well.  Because sometimes, you just don’t know where you put your keys!

Within the app, you can track multiple devices, whether it’s your keys, wallet, camera, or anything else.  The app will also give you a “last seen” location on a map, in case your two devices are out of range of one another.  So, you can travel to the “last seen” location and try ringing your device to help you try to find it.  The app will also let you know the inSite device’s battery level, which is very helpful because if you count on the inSite device; you don’t want it to run out of juice.  Another neat trick that the app can do is post to Facebook or Twitter when your device goes out of range of your smartphone to let you, and your friends know, that you left your valuables behind.  You can also set up email alerts for this as well.

I absolutely think the inSite device will be essential to those who always leave their keys, wallet, or other valuables behind often.  Since we are all usually attached, literally and emotionally, to our smartphones, we can count on the inSite device to let us know when we’ve left behind our other items.

What I Like:  Tiny, sleek design; Battery lasts 1 year; “Last Seen” feature gives you a chance at finding lost items; Alarm is loud; Included lanyard is great for keys.

What Needs Improvement:  The need to reopen the app on your phone every time you restart.
