It’s a Subscription World, and We Just Live In It

HP is causing a bit of a firestorm with their recent announcement that enterprise customers with HP ProLiant Servers will no longer have access to firmware updates past their initial warranty period unless customers have enrolled in a Care Pack Service or support agreement. Apparently HP did not see the irony in their blog post titled “Customers for life”.

Google+ Gets HDR Scape and Zoom Editing

Google’s ubiquitous social network Google+ gets a picture editing update which allows for adding high dynamic range (HDR) effects to a single image, with a single click. HDR Scape is currently available in the Snapseed apps for Android and iOS and today you can use it in Google+ by editing a photo and clicking HDR SCAPE in the right corner.

Meet the Son of Facebook Poke: Paper – stories from Facebook

So what’s your verdict on Facebook’s newest “Game Changing” social application, Paper? While it’s an interesting attempt to paper over (get it) Facebook’s stale UI and stale content – the fact that a lot of the news from Paper is curated (aka picked for you by a human) makes me believe that this is a non-starter. Here’s why.

Has Google Voice Been Left for Dead?

An article this morning mentions a service which blocks annoying robocalls. These calls are mostly illegal and advertise dubious services. I regularly receive robocalls to create or enhance a web site that I could have done myself for free. Why hasn’t Google Voice implemented a solution blocking these? Is it because Google Voice is (all but) dead?

Amazon Prime Fee May Rise By $20 – $40

Amazon reported  quarterly earnings today, and revenues were $25.59 billion vs expected revenues of $26.06 billion. Sales were up 20% over 2013, however Amazon missed their revenue forecast which caused the stock to decline 10.6% after hours. Even though sales increased by a healthy margin, the stock market looks to the company’s ability to meet (or exceed) revenue goals.

Say Hello to Microsoft OneDrive

If you’ve been going crazy wondering how Microsoft has chosen to rebrand their SkyDrive service then you can rest easily today. The new name is OneDrive. You may recall Microsoft lost a trademark suit back in June 2013 with BSkyB. Until now nobody knew exactly how Microsoft would handle this. Looks as if renaming is how they’re handling it. Now you know. For current users of either SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro, you’re all set. The service will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the…

Google’s Achilles Heel: It’s All About the (Multiple) Accounts

If any company wants to go right for the jugular with Google, they should focus on the poor experience of using multiple Google accounts. Google has struggled since inception to get this right. Multiple accounts  kinda work — but only intermittently and awkwardly; add the desperate prompt to create a Google+ account for every email, and it’s chaos.

Is It Time to Stick a Fork in Windows Phone 8?

It seems everyone who reviews Windows Phone 8 loves it, they just “aren’t in love with it”. And Nokia Q4 2013 sales figures show a product category limping so badly it couldn’t eek out a sales gain during the recent holiday quarter.  No doubt Microsoft will keep pushing Windows Phone, but is that enough?

Here’s Why You Always Ski with a Buddy in Avalanche Country

This December 2013 YouTube video of skiers at Utah’s Alta ski resort shows the importance of skiing with a buddy within avalanche prone areas – and proceeding downhill separately.  This GoPro footage  shows a skier spotting his brother becoming engulfed in an avalanche leaving him buried to the very top of his ski helmet. All caught on video.

Microsoft Surface 2 Back in Stock Online at Microsoft Store

If you were searching for a Microsoft Surface 2 online around holiday time there’s a good chance you had trouble finding one – at least in stock at the Microsoft store.  After writing down almost $1 Billion of the original Surface models Microsoft was understandably cautious about estimating demand for the follow-up Surface 2 and Surface Pro.

Path for Windows Enters Open Beta

Path is a mobile social network billed as ” the trusted place for your personal life. It’s where you can be yourself, stay close to the people who matter most and share life instead of links..”

The Wizcom Readingpen TS Reviewed; It Helps With The Hard Words

About a month ago, we were sent the Wizcom Readingpen TS to review. With two middle school children I had some curiosity about how it might help them read easier. The concept of the pen is simple – scan across a word or sentence. The pen converts the  information to spoken words  and if needed provides the definition, synonyms and Spanish version of the word. This is useful for anyone needing a little extra help with difficult words while reading a book. How does it work in practice?

Amber Alert GPS Keeps an Eye on Your Child’s Location

Amber Alert GPS is a tiny matchbox sized GPS device used to track the movement of your child. According to the manufacturer you slip the GPS into your child’s backpack (or other article that stays with them) and can then track their location for up to 24 hours. There’s also several  interesting features like speed, temperature and remote audio monitoring that are offered as well. For the last few weeks I’ve been putting this to the test and using it to track my kids. Here’s what I found. The normal pricing for this Amber Alert GPS is $279 though I…

Oregon Scientific Marathon Walker Measures Your Progress Step By Step

The Marathon Walker from Oregon Scientific is a pedometer that measures the distance (steps or KM/Miles) you walk  or run. Unlike other more basic pedometers the Marathon Walker uses accelerometer technology. This means you’ll obtain a reading whether you clip it to your belt or slip it into a pocket. I’m an avid walker so when the company sent us one to test  I jumped at the chance.
