I’m loving the Monster DNA headphones I reviewed last month. (Read the review.) They look good, sound good and are comfortable. and now that Monster is lending support to High School Nation more people than ever will have the chance to experience them. If you are not familiar with High School Nation, it is a performing arts program that has worked with over 5,000 public high schools and middle schools over the past ten years to provide fun and free lunchtime entertainment for students. High School Nation isn’t just about providing free lunchtime concerts though. No, it goes one step further and also works with students and educators to help develop their musical talents. This is accomplished, in part, by giving them the chance to learn firsthand from established artists in performance, digital and fine arts.

So what will Monster’s role with High School Nation be? Monster will offer a specially designed booth in the Guitar Center Music Experience Zone. In it students will be able to try out products like the Monster DNA headphones, and learn about how the special MusicShare feature allows groups of friends to enjoy their music simultaneously. (As I noted in my review, I love the idea of the MusicShare feature but have not had occasion to use it… yet.) The company will also be providing Monster DNA headphones at Jam Hub music demo stations. At these stations students will be able to experiment with electronic drum kits and keyboards. It is great marketing for Monster but also gives kids a chance to try out some of the best music accessories on the market today.

And the students won’t just be trying out the headphones and other Monster accessories. No, they’ll have a chance to enter daily raffles where they can win Monster DNA headphones, hats and T-shirts. As Monster’s Noel Lee explains, “High School Nation is a great way for young people to not only enjoy fun lunchtime concerts from terrific artists, but get involved in the arts themselves and express their passion for music, art and life. The Huawei W1, Huawei’s first Windows Phone 8 handset, has a 4” IPS LCD touch screen made of Gorilla Glass, a speedy 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 1950mAh battery, a 5MP auto-focus camera with LED Flash and a 0.3MP front-facing camera with a Single LED flash. And while these specs may not be the bleeding- or even bruised- edge of current phone technology they will certainly hold their own. Judie and I met with Huawei representatives and saw the phone back at CES 2013 in January. And while it wasn’t the most amazingly powerful handset on display in Las Vegas, it did look like a solid entry into the Windows Phone 8 market. Best of all, beginning on May 20, the Huawei W1 will be available at Walmart for just $229 on an Unlimited 30-Day No-Contract Plan. As Todd Greenberg, General Manager, US Windows Phone Sales at Microsoft observed,

I was lucky enough to attend the Press Conference where the Samsung GALAXY S 4 was announced. The event took place at Radio City Music Hall and was a packed spectacle befitting the location. (See the original post.) Despite maintaining its predecessor’s plastic build the S 4 impressed me. It packs some great new technology and while it is evolutionary rather than revolutionary building on an already great phone isn’t a bad thing.

Since the Samsung GALAXY S 4 is made of plastic you will likely want to protect yours from life’s daily bumps and bruises. Speck has some great options. Like the phone itself the initial cases for the S 4 are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. And, once again, that’s not a bad thing.

The Speck CandyShell for Samsung GALAXY S 4 builds on the solid, popular design of the CandyShell line. An outer shell of hard plastic protects the phone from impact while sporting a glossy shine that looks and feels great.

The inside of the case is a soft rubbery lining that absorbs shock and cradles the phone like a baby. The two come together at the corners for visual interest and the edge of the case rises just enough above the screen to provide a bit of lay-on-the-table protection. The company is also showing off the CandyShell Grip for Samsung Galaxy S 4. The CandyShell Grip for iPhone 4 was Elana’s favorite iPhone case and this maintains the feature that drew her to that case- grip! (She would often hold up her phone and say “Got Grip? I do!!”) Interestingly, while the first CandyShell Grip cases were targeted for gamers Speck is clearly going after avid textures with this case. As they explain, “Textured for texting. Rubber stripes give you a no-slip grip great for when you’re shooting messages back and forth.” Like all CandyShell cases the CandyShell Grip has a dual-layer casing that provides two layers of protection in a single-piece construction. We reviewed Phiaton’s MODERNA MS 200 Earphones last fall. I was impressed by the quality, the design, the comfort and, most of all, the sound. As the time I concluded:

What I Like: Great unboxing experience; Comfortable; Look terrific; In-Line microphone and remote doesn’t stand out but works well; Tangle free cord; Sound great

What Needs Improvement: Nothing but at a price of $150 you had better LOVE the red color and unusual earbud design

I’ve used them quite a bit since then —  they are in my regular headphone/earphone rotation — and I continue to be impressed with them. They have held up well, and I see no signs of wear on them despite the fact that I have not treated them gently.

We are lucky enough to have an extra pair of them, and we figured we would end March by giving a brand new pair of them away. Good luck, everyone!!

Fine Print: Before Globalgig can ship, they will need to coordinate a call with each winner to activate them as new users for their free first month of service. Because this is a subscription based product, winners will be prompted for credit card/payment information and charged a $1 activation fee to process them as new customers, but will not be charged for any actual service until their first free month is over. After that it will be up to the winners to determine if they really like the device/service and want to continue on as customers or cancel. In the even of cancelation the hotspot is their to keep for reactivation when they next travel.
