The Low Down:
Yes, the iPhone comes with a simple weather app. The native app is polished and works well but sometimes more is needed. As a coach, weather greatly affects my daily activities, so detailed weather information helps me plan ahead.  The Weather Channel is a familiar source to most and they have put together a nice app. Best of all it’s free.

The homepage gives the current conditions. Just about everything you need to know about right now is included.  The temperature is large, easy to read and is accompanied with a graphic representation of the conditions. There is a smaller reading that includes fields like temperature, wind speeds etc…  This has been great just before class is ending so I could quickly see what to expect on my way out to practice. Tabs are located on the bottom of the page to refine your view.  The options are hourly, 36 hour and 10 day. Each includes information about that time period. Information is less detailed as the time period increases.  *Yes the 10 day forecast below is for my area!

When the occasion shower or storm visits there is a map view. The chosen weather view is laid on top of a Google map. My map usually stays on the radar view. Numerous options are available, including a transparent color code of temperatures. If there is impending weather, just press the severe tab to read any alerts for the area.

The only feature of the app that does not impress me is the video tab. The videos are similar to the local on the 8s seen on The Weather Channel. After the local conditions are given a weatherman/woman gives the conditions and forecast for the nearest metro area. The videos are great and informative, but as I watched on Sunday… the videos from Wednesday were playing. With that, all of the information in the videos are available in other parts of the app in real time.

My town of residence is the default city and others may be added in the favorites. The 3G S is my first phone with GPS and helped to discover that the app is able to find your current location and the corresponding weather. It is perfect when you are traveling.

If you ever need current or future weather information and the Apple app is not enough, this is a must download.  This free app has found a place on my homepage and is used daily.

What I like: Real time, extensive weather data.  The ability for the app to find me and give current conditions.

What I don’t: The video feature although this is not a deal breaker for me.

Should you download? Yes!  The Weather Channel has put a great app together and it is free!!!

  1. Love this App. Use it nearly every day. The forecasts are accurate and the ability to view a radar map is awesome.

  2. I’ll have to give this one a go to compare to the Weatherbug app I currently use.
