In the Book of Amos you’ll find the famous quote– “I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet…” Well we don’t fare much better. (One look at my stock purchases over the year proves that.) No, neither of us can see into the future… usually. But this time seeing the future is not difficult in the least. Hence we are not only writing this post in advance but we are publishing it early too.

600,000 iPhone Activations Crash AT&T Servers… Mayhem Ensues

Published Thursday June 24th 5pm

Today made Monday June 15th’s iPhone pre-order day look like a walk in the park. Apple and AT&T’s servers could not handle the 600,000 pre-orders that flooded in. The result was broken orders, double orders and even the accidental release of customer information when some customers received other buyer’s order confirmations. Yes, the 15th was bad!! But it made today look smooth by comparison.

The activation process began early this morning when the first iPhone 4s landed in the hands of those who arrived at Apple Stores upon opening. At first, it looked like Apple and AT&T had learned a lesson from the prior week. But at the volume increased and FedEx began home delivery of iPhones, the system utterly broke down. For many customers activations looked as if they would move to completion only to lock up at the last moment. Others weren’t able to even begin the process.

For much of the afternoon anyone trying to activate their iPhone was greeted by “Please come back later.”

And as the day went on things went from bad to worse. AT&T blamed Apple, Apple blamed AT&T and eager iPhone 4 owners were completely fed up with both.

So should we have held off on posting this? Do you think are we wrong in our prediction? Is it going to be better than we expect? Worse???
