All the iPad vs Vaporware Nonsense is Growing Tiring…

Preview-3.jpg

In a recent interview Acer’s Chairman JT Wang predicted that the iPad’s near-100% market share in the tablet space would drop to between 20 and 30 percent.

Now PC World has posted an article entitled “Five Reasons to Pick an HP Tablet Over an iPad”.

So I thought I would add my voice into the mix and offer up Five Reasons They Should SHUT IT! No, actually I only need ONE!

Neither Acer nor HP has actually released a device and until they do there is NOTHING to talk about. Nothing! I mean, when we were at CES we saw TONS of tablets and all were promised in 2010. In fact most were promised in the first HALF of 2010. Then the iPad came out and all those projects were either scrapped or pushed back and retooled. Now it is the end of August and we still see nothing. Sure there are lots of rumors and promises but there is nothing actually in hand.

So predicting Apple’s share dropping to 20-30 percent when you haven’t actually released anything yourself is ridiculous. And pitting the iPad against a device that doesn’t even exist in the market place yet is just stupid. It is like announcing the birth of your daughter the doctor… it means nothing and just makes you look silly. So please… as Jon Stewart said on Crossfire a few years ago“Please… Stop…”

  1. Well said! I have made no secret of my Android love, and I will (probably) pick up an Android tablet like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but they need to stop with the PR soundbites and redirect that energy towards ACTUALLY RELEASING A DEVICE.

This has been a huge peeve of mine as well, and you summed it up nicely. 🙂

Yep. If they aren’t careful, Android will have the same fate as Maemo did on smartphones….only a could have been.

I think we’ll see something REALLY soon and it will have aggressive pricing. Hopefully the really cheap ones with resistive touch screens go away.

Really looking forward to the Galaxy Tablet.

  3. Bravo!

It’s getting pretty late in the year to be releasing anything that will make a sales impact during the Christmas season. If it’s not shipping in September you can pretty much forget about it.

And Apple continues selling a million or more a month. I bet they’ll sell twice that many in November and December, if they can make that many.

  4. I remember an eWeek thing from back in April that was a slideshow version very similar to what the PC World one says … but of course back then HP was coming out with a Win7 tablet …

I hope they all DO come to fruition: give us CHOICE between iOS, Android, Win7 (or some variant) and WebOS. With more choices we all win.

But these constant ‘OMG Apple r d0m3d’ posts based on potential speculation of performance based on unreleased hardware … um, yep, what Dan said 🙂

    • So far, the tablets I’ve seen don’t… really compete. Not even on specs. And I have bad, bad memories of WinXP Tablet Edition, amongst other things. And Windows Mobile 5, then 5.5, then 6.0… all of which make me distrust Ballmer’s bold statements about how Microsoft’ll be knocking Apple out of the Tablet or portable computing arenas.

A lot of articles are still trying to count chickens before they’ve hatched. Anyone remember when Courier or Slate were supposed to be the iPad killers? PCWorld and others have been remarkably silent about them, despite previously singing their praises, since the projects got cancelled.

      • I know – but do you *really* expect those places to have a feature called ‘how we totally screwed up on Courier & Slate’, wherein they admit to adopting pretty much an ‘anything but Apple’ attitude as they continue to post article after article comparing non-existent products against something that is shipping? Now THAT I would love to see 🙂

        • Well, they could make a passing comment about the Courier or Slate instead of pretending it never existed… which is something I rather HATE about how Apple does things at times. Like the way they pretended the iPhone 4 antenna issue never existed, or how there were no multitasking OSes on phones before iOS 4 showed up.
