The Plant Buddies caught my eye when Ali over on ChipChick posted on them last night. The Plant Buddies are selection of endangered cacti that you can carry with you, nurture for a time and then release back into the “wild” to help them repopulate and become less endangered. Each “kit” includes a starter plant (Stone Rose – Genus “Anacampseros”, Golden Marble – Genus “Opuntia Monachantha”, Eve’s Needle – Genus “Astrocylindropuntia Subulata”), soil, a plastic dome housing, and a keychain attachment.

You can carry your little friend with you and, so long as you water it every 30 days, it should do fine. As Fascinations, the company behind the Plant Buddies notes,

Over time the plant will outgrow its small home and will need to be repotted or released back to nature. By replanting them throughout the USA, these endangered plants are given a better chance for species recovery.

Plant Buddies encourages the public, one customer at a time, to adopt and nurture an endangered plant. So adopt a plant, build it a home, take it with you wherever you roam!

And if you were wondering why the company can sell endangered plants they explain,

Fascinations is permitted to sell these nursery grown endangered plants and has to date already released many back into wild via a plant rescue program.
