G5 Games is one of the big publishers of so-called casual games, and my favorite publisher of those games for iOS devices. They have found a sweet spot of hidden object, puzzle and time-management games that play well and present an excellent value on those platforms. Some of these games – such as Treasure Seekers and Supermarket Mania – have spawned full franchises that carry from one game to the next and bring the audience right with them! Now the next entry in another time-management favorite has arrived – Stand O’Food 3! Let’s take a look.

The Hype:
The most popular burger-serving game gets a much-awaited sequel! The classic fast-paced, simple and addictive game play mechanics of the first game are reinforced with more abilities to satisfy hungry customers. Riding the wave of success in his hometown, Ronnie the Chef extends the operations of Stand O’Food chain to Tinseltown, where he meets Nikki and Mr. Clarence, and disrupts revenge plans of evil Mr. Torg.

Open restaurants around Tinseltown, and serve clients fast and healthy food including fresh-made burgers, pies, lasagnas, French fries, coffee, ice cream and soda. Play over 75 levels and 12 bonus levels to unlock over 33 achievements and obtain expert status. Enjoy the storyline told through beautifully-drawn comic-style pictures.

The Reality:
How can you assign the tag ‘casual’ to a game that gets you frantic, on the edge of your seat, trying to satisfying your customers and meet all of the requirements for an optimum level rating? I know it is a meaningless genre assignment, but it is worth reminding everyone that as soon as you see ‘time management’ in a description for a game you will not likely find it a ‘casual’ experience.

In the Stand O’Food games, you control Chef Ronnie as he makes food for his customers. The core of the game is simply about putting stuff between a bun and serving it to a customer. Of course – reality is never that simple!

Every recipe requires a few components, and optional extras will net you more profit. In other words, a cheese sandwich is fine, but with lettuce, tomato and hot sauce your sales and satisfaction will REALLY soar!

Stand O’Food 3 follows Ronnie as he decides to take his success and seek challenges in Tinseltown. Wait – didn’t Supermarket Mania 2 move to TinselTown? Yes! And you will encounter Nikki here as well! The story is told in-between missions using comic book style panels full of humor and fun characters.

As the game progresses and you grow your restaurant chain you will be able to add more options and machines to your food assembly line. Pretty soon you will have more than a half-dozen production lines, three or more extra things like sodas or shakes that you can serve, new food like lasagna, and loads of toppings. But sequencing is extremely important. If you need that chicken patty that is way back on your conveyor you need to either build other sandwiches or throw out some food to get their. Each of those put you at risk of upsetting customers or losing money.

The performance of Stand O’Food 3 was stellar on my iPad. I tend to prefer these games on the iPad, but historically the Stand O’Food games have controlled very well on the iPhone and iPod Touch as well. I also tried the Android version on my 7″ Acer Iconia tablet, and found that the newly optimized data download process made getting started much less frustrating. The Android version looked like an upscaled phone version rather than the gorgeous high-resolution iPad release, but was still satisfactory in terms of both graphics and performance.

Stand O’Food 3 is a very easy game to recommend – because chances are if you are considering it you have at least tried one of the other Stand O’Food games. If not, grab the free download and try it out. Chances are you’ll have a blast and want to use the in-app system to buy the full game!
