I took advantage of a recent W00t deal, and I now have a US Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0. This is the US edition, as opposed to the more common Asian/European version.

Let’s take a look!

Features
• The 5-inch (12.7cm) display allows you browse full web pages and read small text without resizing the screen. The Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 supports various video formats (DivX, Xvid, H.263, Ogg, MPEG4, Flac). It also delivers an impressive viewing experience on the large screen
• SoundAlive maximizes the performance of Samsung mobile devices for real sound quality via Samsung Audio Signal Post Processing technologies, including 3D effects, reinforced low-tones, optimized tone clarity and more. Feel like you’re in a real theatre with the Virtualizer feature that turns a 2-channel sound source into a 360-degree, 3D experience
• Samsung Apps allows you easily download applications that were developed exclusively for the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0. Enjoy various applications for games, news, dictionaries, education, or social network services
• Bundled Google services, so that you can easily run Google voice searches, Google search, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Talk and more
• Access all of your favorite social network services directly. Keep tabs on your family and friends no matter where you are
• The Qik application, which can be shared over social network services, allows you make free video and voice calls
• With Wi-Fi support, you can take advantage of free wireless connections to access the internet
• Supports Adobe Flash 10.1, so you can browse media-rich web pages just like you would from a PC

  1. Interesting to see this up close.  It’d be interesting to compare this device with say my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate.  I’d be curious to see just how much more useful an additional 1″ of real estate would be in addition to the corresponding form factor size.  I’m looking forward to hearing your take on the multimedia performance, since that seems to be the big plus for this device. Though I can’t help but wonder…is just large enough to be awkward to use in a typical day, or a tad small as compared to a larger Android tablet or even the iPad?

  2. I hate to burst your bubble. But that’s not the US addition. The US addition being released October 16 will have android 2.3.5 out of the box. Woot sold the international version. Mine worked for 10 minutes till it locked up and went black. I had to send it back. I did really like it though. Next time I’ll buy one from Best Buy or Amazon.

    • I have no bubble to burst. I have the device in hand already and love it.
The device as is is pretty freaking awesome. I’m excited to see what the us release offers and what happens when updates come.
      Sent from my iPod

  3. Dan, interested to hear your take on this device, particularly how/if the GPS works (could it replace a stand alone GPS for navigation).
