Ellen Reads from '50 Shades of Grey'

If you follow pop culture and popular books at all, you have heard something about the novel 50 Shades of Grey. If not, I’ll catch you up quickly: it was a Twilight fan-fiction which gained interest from publishers but needed a change of characters, which basically puts a young college student and a rich older man together … but rather than vampires and werewolves we have whips and chains. In fact, Christian Grey makes young Anastasia Steele sign a contract allowing him to subject her to his every BDSM whim. And if you don’t know what BDSM is … chances are this book isn’t for you.

This isn’t great writing, as noted here:

If fine writing is like bittersweet truffles, this book is like a wad of Gummi Bears stuck to your back teeth. To use another food metaphor — and I’m not sure this author knows what a metaphor is — it’s the literary equivalent of eating Sugar Smacks for dinner.

The book has rocketed to the top of the New York Times bestseller list, showing the selling power of what has transformed from the extremely popular ‘romance’ category to what is now referred to as ‘mommy porn’ … which indicates the main demographic of the readership – and the core element of the content.

Anyway, the clip below is a reminder of the core truth that Ellen is first and foremost an extremely funny woman. Oh – and if you visit Anastasia – don’t eat the pancakes.
